New Coach

I don't think at this point Moser gets fired unless A happens. But, I'd kind of put it at 50/50 he's back.

Whatever happens with Porter, I am fed up with having an entirely new roster every year. The college basketball game is losing me. I quit pro basketball many years ago. I quit watching Olympic basketball when it went pro. I have always enjoyed and watched a lot of high school basketball but it is probably a certainty, they will find a way to ruin it as well (sooner or later).
You keep posting stuff like this. And while I think it was more enjoyable to follow college basketball before, I still love following OU hoops. If you don't, maybe this isn't the board for you?

This has always been such a weird sentiment to me. "I hate watching better players simply because they are being fairly compensated for their work and have some ability to control where they work, like 99 percent of Americans in all walks of life."

You’re right. These aren’t “college kids” anymore. They’re essentially semi pro athletes that wear the university logo. They have no real allegiance to the school and will take more $$ at the drop of a hat. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. I’ve completely shifted my mindset regarding college football and basketball.

Now, my only real beef is that they shouldn’t get full ride scholarships AND the paycheck. Take one or the other. Either take the paycheck and pay for your own schooling or forfeit the paycheck for the scholarship. Then maybe the school can use that scholarship money for veterans or something like that.

Really? It’s weird that people don’t like watching college sports anymore because the players are semi pro and have no loyalty or connection to the school or the community. You can’t figure that one out?

The truth is this has been coming for a long time. The “amateur” has been eroding for decades and players have been getting paid by some schools for a while now. However, Prior to NIL, most players had at least a small connection to the school or the community. There was still a sense of pride and that college atmosphere. Now, it’s all gone. I still follow and enjoy OU but my love of college sports is dying and is nowhere near where it once was because watching a bunch of mercenaries get paid to play lesser football is not as much fun. It just isn’t. All recruiting now comes down to money. Nothing else matters to players anymore but money. That is ruining every college sport. But I guess that’s weird to you.

Imagine nfl or nba letting the players switch every year.. bird on the Celtics one year but he loses to the Lakers, so he joins them and magic. next year then they both go to the pacers bc they like the midwest. Switch teams every year for 4 years, why not. Yay! Player empowerment!! Stockton and Malone could have joined the bulls, how fun. The possibilities are endless

all of the scholarship money comes from the athletic Dept ie generated from basketball and football players .. not from the school

I know. I guess I don’t think it would be crazy that the athletic department give some of that revenue to other parts of the school for scholarships if the players opt to take the paycheck instead of the scholarship. I mean it’s all under the university umbrella.

It's at all levels.

I sound like an old guy (I'm not young but not old), but I remember when the goal was to win a state championship with the guys you grew up with, then to get a scholarship to State U that you grew up rooting for. Times have changed.

Parents pay big $ for travel teams and transfer their kids to the right high schools (even prep schools) so their kids can get a scholarship and perhaps be in a position to play pro ball. The increased cost of college plays into this, but the astronomical salaries in professional sports are the goal.

It's all about the bag of $. I have no issue with players being paid for their services, but the trade-off is the loyalty to the $ and not the uniform. They don't love the school like we do. It's where they work.

Either enough people will get sick of it and stop watching and maybe that will make change happen or we will all just get used to it

First, I am talking mainly about his complaint about pro sports and the Olympics. The extent to which some people begrudge athletes for getting paid is silly. As is the myth that pro athletes don't care about winning.

And college sports hasn't been ruined. Far from it. Ratings are great, revenue keeps going up, and people still watch despite moaning and groaning. Parts of it are screwed up, no doubt, just as parts of every industry are. We are in the very early phases of NIL and the portal. Things will likely level out and the system will likely change. But as I have said before, the NCAA is to blame because their stubborn and disingenuous insistence that college players were amateurs and deserved no pay and shouldn't even be entitled to compensation from outside entities for NIL is what led to all the lawsuits and the current chaos.

I don’t disagree but ratings & interest continue to climb. Imagine it will turn off some long-time fans but again administrators, coaches, players will all chase the $ in their own way.
