At this point, if we can't get an older, established...

Hiring Smart because of his run in the tournament this year would be like paying big bucks for Cody Ross after his World Series performance. They had a good run on the big stage, doesn't mean they're worth going after.

You are obviously forgetting his 2010 CBI championship

Shaka is living off of Grant's recruits. I wouldn't hire anyone without a proven D-1 recruiting history/resume. Shaka just doesn't have this yet. He may be able to recruit, but who knows at this point.

Stevens is playing with his own kids. I would love Stevens but don't think this could possibly happen. Stevens is the next wooden.

I joe won't, but I would hire Bruce pearl on the rebound cheap. If he won't come, I would offer Brooks Thompson for cheap dollars.

I've heard that Joe C. wants to go "old", but I'd break the bank if I had to trying to get Stevens.

it's rather funny how NONE of you seem to address Shaka Smart's style of play.

Shaka has an exciting style that works with lesser talent against greater talent. His style requires his player to play really hard at all times. I think his style would work really well with Kelvin type players, but not Capel type players.

Make lots of three's and play no defense.

You obviously have never watched VCU play. Their ability to make other teams uncomfortable on D has carried them just as much as their three point shooting.

Sigh. They finished 7th in the CAA in points allowed, 10th in FG defense, 11th in rebounding defense and 5th in 3 point FG defense. (Out of 12 teams)

Yes, they've caught lightning in a bottle, no question. But my point, as was evident by my first post in this thread, is that that's all he and his team have done. It proves nothing about his viability as a candidate for our opening.

I've seen them play in the regular season, I didn't like what I saw.

thats not what I have seen. I loved what I saw from them defensively. All over kansas

Please. Kansas missed open shot after open shot. If you really want to use six game as reason to hire a guy, fine, the flavor of the month always tastes good that month...

1. I dont think you watched them in the regular season. I watched them and they played D just like they are now. Now, they got BETTER over the season ... but as an ODU alum I've seen VCU play a few times and Shaka's style has been this way all season.

2. you don't just look at stats and think you can make conclusions like this. If so then NONE of the Final Four teams would be where they are.

3. In fact, making some crack about "no defense" tells me you haven't watched them at all.

4. so it's always "the other team had a bad shooting night" huh? That means USC, G'Town, Purdue, Florida State, and Kansas ALL just had horrid shooting nights and VCU had nothing to do with it? Please.

I looked at the stats to confirm what I suspected, unless they steal the ball you're probably going to score on them. 10th in FG defense is what it is--bad--that's a simple conclusion.

As I mentioned, they've caught fire in the tourney, I take nothing away from them in that regard. I think they've been really exciting to watch, actually. But, the fact remains, I don't want to hire the flavor of the month.

Ben Howland

I know this sounds crazy and completely unlikely to happen, but I think it's as likely as Stevens. Heard rumors he was ready to get out of L.A., and I think Gottlieb threw his name out there. If that were to happen that would be an out of the ballpark hire for Joe C. Think about it, hiring UCLA's basketball coach away from them. Which is exactly why I think it has almost no chance of happening. But I do wonder about it.

Terry Evans: Head Coach
Bob Hoffman: Assistant Coach
Tommy Griffin: Assistant Coach

3 guys with head coaching experience, all Oklahomans, all winners.

Me likey. Go ahead and seal the border... not many blue chippers leaving the state with that group in Norman IMO. Obviously KU would still sleeze around and cherry pick here and there but big deal. Texas would be recruited WELL enough that between OK kids & TX kids, OU could put a ton a talent on the court with a few outsiders sprinkled in for good measure. I think recruiting wise on the D1 level, this could be a very nice staff. The only question that would remain is coaching.
