Bennett Commits to OU!!!

Seems about a CJ Washington replacement. Hopefully a little more but doesn't seem likely.

I think cold is a cj replacement. Bennett has a different skillet and should help us defensively against more athletic front courts.

Great news. Is Bennett a shot blocker? With his wing span he ought to be a defensive presence.

DJ Bennett was juco All Region honorable mention while CJ Washington was a juco All American.

Expectations should be based accordingly.

Rivals is also showing Bennett as committed if that means anything. If the guy can play right away, I'd red shirt Arent like he initially wanted to do when he came to OU.

Bennett is long and athletic, his wingspan is amazing. I think he will provide a presence like Juan Pattillo. Looks similar

My point was not about having higher expectations but instead avoiding an apples to oranges comparison. Bennett is at least 3" taller than cj and has a massive wingspan with great athleticism. Will his impact be greater? Probably not -- he is not as skilled as cj -- but he will give us the flexibility we need to defend the more athletic front courts.

Agreed Pnk. CJ actually gave us some nice minutes in certain circumstances and if Bennett can do the same protecting the paint that's all we can ask. Anything more would be gravy.

Same with Spangler. Hopefully he can give us a little more than Honore did, which at times was a nice spark.

CJ quite abit and Barry occasionally were usefull subs on losing teams and a program that is currently in the ditch. Spangler and Bennett are different classes of athlete.

It seems to me that a team in our situation needs to bring in players who will be better than the ones who are leaving the program. It seems to me that we have done that. I don't think a team with a losing record can expect much more. I'm very pleased with the prospects of this class. If we can continue to upgrade the talent with each recruiting class, we'll be in good shape.

Not a bad idea, unless the coaching staff feels that he may not improve enough to contribute after a redshirt year. If that is the case, it may be best to go with him this year, so his scholarship will be available for the 2013 class.

NO!!!!!

We need that scholarship to open up in 2013. And Arent could redshirt 5 times, it isn't going to help his game. He just isn't that talented.

I agree. Especially with (more than likely) only 3 ships in a huge 2013 class available... I wouldn't want to whittle that down to two.

I think we'll have 4, but your point is taken.

Grooms, Pledger, Osby, Fitz, and Arent all graduate, plus Cole gets a scholarship.

This still makes me wonder if we didn't back off Parker some in the recruiting game. If we have 4 scholarships available, two of which will need to be big men, and one of which will hopefully be Clark, that only leaves one left. We're in on some really good talent in Texas, and there is still Woodard as well. Just not sure why Parker would have dropped us like he did if it weren't b/c we were cooling on him.

Edit: Just realized you might have been counting Henry as taking one of those scholarships. At this point, I kind of hope he doesn't. We need two posts that are more starter-ready in this class. Henry is a pretty big project player, IMO. And he'll have been out of basketball for what, 2 years?

The other thing this does is start to even out the classes a bit.

We'll have Bennett, Clark, M'Baye, and Neal graduating in 2 years. That next class, after Spangler redshirts, will have 4 (Hornbeak, Cousins, Hield, and Spangler) in it. Class after that should have 4 in it as well. I'd think, as a coach, this is what you'd ideally have, though transfers and redshirts could potentially change things.

Next year is a crucial recruiting year and we need all the ships we can get. If Arent redshirts we waste a 'ship that could go to a more talented Frosh. Also seems like 2013 is shaping up to be a great year for regional talent and we are in on quite a few talented players.

Also, when was the last time we started a season with 13 deserving players (ie, not rewarding a walk on with an extra scholarship) on scholarship? That doesn't happen very often. Practices should be VERY intense next year with 12 scholarship guys, plus Cole, that will be game eligible.

Are you just assuming Cole would get a scholly next year or was that actually part of his 'recruitment' as a walk-on?

Not assuming. That is what Cole, and I believe Kruger, have said. It's not an "earn a scholarship" thing either, he has been told he'll be on scholarship.

Every time I've spoke with Cole he's of the understanding that he will be placed on scholarship after redshirting his freshman year.
