It is probably just my fault for having such high expectations, but Tanner Groves has been pretty disappointing this year.

Probably not a fair take but man, i was expecting a big 12 poy candidate

he is OU's leading scorer ...

POY wow yeah he was never going to be that guy ..

There are at least five more disappointing transfers in the Big 12 alone. Groves has put up the numbers I expected, the one frustrating aspect has been the inconsistency from game to game.

I think your expectations were a bit high. I thought he would be more consistent, than he has been, but he was awesome at Kansas and struggled against UT last night. I think he is trying to be "tougher" last night and I think it takes away from the pick and pop game. He's not great at rolling to the basket, so I'd love to see them incorporate that aspect more.

He will be better next year.

I thought Goldwire would be better, he has been better lately but I continue to be amazed at how much he turns the ball over. It has been better recently.

Groves desperately needs to hit the gym. By appearances, he is probably the least muscular/strong of all our players, and he's a center! If he can add some strength he wouldn't get pushed around as much down low and IMO be more consistent. I'm pretty much disappointed by the entire team...I probably had too high of expectations though, considering they were put together last minute, really.

I was just meaning disappointing transfers for OU

To be fair...that isn't saying much

I didn't expect him to win it but to atleast be in the conversation as one of the conferences best players.

I was expecting in the 16 ppg range and 8 rpg with a couple assists per game.
Not 12 & 5

Azubuike won it with a line of 14/11/1
T Robinson won it was 18/12/2
Morris won it with 17/8/1.5

More importantly though, like others, I thought he would be more consistent and the offense would run through him more.

Tanner isn't even the biggest disappointment with the last name Groves.

Look, Tanner has had a rough go of it lately and he's very limited in so many ways but he also has a lot of pressure to be the guy and has almost no help. Or very inconsistent help. It's easy for opposing teams to take him out of the game(s) when you don't really have to account for another big and you don't have to account for a consistent scoring threat on the perimeter. Shut down Mo's 3s, focus on Tanner, and you'll normally beat OU.

you are not wrong but i didn't really have high expectations of his brother this year

T Groves is really an off the bench guy that if he’s scoring, you milk it until it runs out. He’s also one of the worst defensive players I ever saw. Basically a match up guy. Against other slow guys like McCormick at Kansas he’s ok.
However, as far as a main dude, he’s not that guy pal.

Jacob Groves has thwarted the development of the bench. He brings nothing. He shoots 21 percent from 3 where CJ shoots 40. He’s also the team’s worst perimeter defender.

So I ask, what does he bring to the table?

I get what you're saying. Tanner as a POY candidate was probably way too lofty but I understand your thought process. I would have said Agbaji or Remy Martin (his year has been a surprise to say the least) in the preseason. Tanner wasn't even on the preseason first team predictions.

That said, Tanner averaging only 12.6 ppg on a team that needs a primary scoring option has been a disappointment. I would have guessed 15-18 ppg. But I also figured he'd get more help and that has been inconsistent. I'm not blaming the others solely, Tanner has his faults for sure (defense for example).

I didn't expect huge numbers from Jacob but 3.7 ppg and 22% from 3P? That's after averaging 9.3 ppg & 36% from 3P for EWU. He dropped 23 vs KU in the tourney. I definitely expected similar, or better (growth), results. Instead, he's essentially a wasted roster spot. It's so weird because he has the tools to be good IMO. I keep waiting for some light to come on and it simply isn't happening. He doesn't even look like he wants to play good basketball.

The biggest transfer disappointment for me is Alondes Williams.... who was marginal at OU and goes to Wake Forest and completely explodes and turns into a 20ppg guy. Where the hell did that come from.

Imagine having an all american just sitting on the bench. Unbelievable development by Alondes.

POY Candidate, no way. Tanner is adjusting. Really not a bad year. Leading scorer, brings emotion, is passionate, gets excited. Wouldn’t mind 4 more like that. He will be better next year beacause he cares. He will get stronger and have a nice season next year. Came from Eastern Washington to Oklahoma and the Big 12. Adjustin.

Idk what people are expecting. We haven’t had a good big man in long time, since spangs. I think groves is better than spangs too. Give the dude and off-season in this system and he may just contend for cpoy next season.

The expectations on this board and others for OU basketball this year were just way too high. Like expecting to be better than last years team that had an NBA player in AR and another quality guard in Harmon, and a guy like Manek that's a good hand. Expecting to replace all those with equal players is just tough. Really this team has probably done a pretty good job of being about what could be expected with the level of talent we have.

I couldn't agree more. I remember thinking last year's team was limited and I would die to get that team back this year. It adds to the disappointment of last year's February meltdown. That was a good basketball team, they should have gone further.

Just my 2 cents on TG.

Yes he had a great game (out of this world) against ku in the tourney.
Now, expecting him to do that against b12 competition EVERY game.. night in night out… was overboard.

He’s a decent post, can hit the three, a bit flat footed gives 100% effort every time out.

Hopefully moser can get a little more athletic big in the next class.
