Billy Clyde Gillispie

Billy Gillispie is one heck of a basketball coach! He would be the perfect fit at OU, where the majority of basketball fans want to see toughness, good fundamentals and high intensity on defense in every game, not just an occasional outing.

Clearly Billy G made some mistakes at UK. But assuming he learned from them and made some changes in his behavior to correct his errors, I would be all for giving him a second chance.

If by 'learned from them and made some changes in his behavior' you mean he's been to rehab and quit drinking, you might be right. I can't see Boren agreeing to hire him after what the end of both Sutton's reigns in Stillwater looked like.

I was gonna say "Do we need our own Sutton?"

BUT...that said...the Suttons were good coaches in Stillwater.

Lol @ the people saying he doesn't deserve a second chance. Clown posts...if he's not in jail he deserves a second chance. And that doesn't just apply to college basketball coaches...but I won't get any further into politics.

No doubt. :ez-laugh:

And if Gillispie brings us the same amount of success that Sutton did for OSU during his tenure, then it would have been an incredible hire.

Gillispie wouldn't be my first choice as OU's head coach either. But he's a darned good one, and he could turn our program around in a hurry if his personal life is in order now. By all accounts Huggins has been a good hire at WVU.

I haven't given it much thought, Trav. All I'm saying is that I would search for a better option without the potential baggage before going after Billy G. If I didn't find someone with his coaching skills, I wouldn't have a problem with giving him another chance...providing my background check didn't turn up anything out of the ordinary since he left UK.

Absolutely. You won't get a better bargain for a more proven coach with Big 12 experience and recruiting ties in the region. He'll be cheaper than Tubby Smith, Buzz Phillips, Lon Krueger or any of the other established coaches who have been mentioned, and that is important for Joe C. It's a slam dunk hire.

It's almost as if this plan was place by God himself bringing HCBG and OU together. It's destiny!!!

I didn't see much on there about his stint at Kentucky.

HCBCG was the SEC co-coach of the year his first year. In his second year (his worst year) his team still made it to the NIT and won more games that year then Capel will win in his last two years!!!

I hate to burst everyones bubble, but Boren won't let this happen. He won't won't a man with a drinking problem coaching at OU.

HCBCG doesn't have a drinking problem! He's been sober now for almost two years! Bob Stoops drinks more than HCBCG does nowadays! Facts!

I have no idea if he's drinking now or not, but as a former bartender here in NYC, I could tell you firsthand about some prominent people, more famous than BCG, who were making a big thing at the time about being sober but were anything but. I know, because I served them drinks.

If we hired Gillispie, it would mark a return to Sampson era basketball. Against the big boys, we'd never be the most talented team on the floor, but we'd always be the toughest. It's tough to win the NCAA tournament with that formula, but winning 20-23 games every year is doable. At this point, that's all I want.

If we're going to take the second chance road I vote for Larry Eustachy.
