Blake had 30 tonight

Interesting thread. Did you see the statistics posted about what NBA rookies had averaged 20+ pts and 12+ rebounds??? Counting Blake there were 9 (I believe) and each is/was a Hall of Famer.... Wish I had copied the list....:OUbball-logo:

I always get a kick out of these posts.

They play unbelievable defense in the NBA.
Shooting percentage is higher in the NBA than in college because the players are about 10 times better. Not because they're not defending them.

:clap:clap:clap

You can also add the usual posts by the people who say they don't watch NBA because the league cheats for certain teams, and there are too many thugs in the league, etc... yet you find them with MLB and NFL signature lines in their profiles. UHHHH, last time I checked, Steroids had ruined America's pasttime, and the NFL had their fair share of felonious members. The NBA gets an unfair rap on many fronts, when in truth the league is full of great athletes and hoopsters.

Blake is a great player, and he brings an extra electricity that has been missing from the NBA in a while.

I usually agree with you Mr B, but I'm not sure I agree with this. I love Blake, and I believe he has vaulted to the top echelon of NBA stars, but the NBA has had plenty of electricity in the last few yrs with the LaBron saga playing out, Dirk finally winning one for the good guys types, and young stars rising in Rose, Howard, etc.... not to mention the renewal of the Lakers/Celtic wars. The NBA was doing fine fan wise prior to Blake's arrival, and his presence has simply added to that. Now if you say he has increased most Sooner fan's awareness of the electricity, I would agree, along with the rise of the Thunder.......

I understand what you're saying, jmizzy. But the main difference I see in Blake and the majority of NBA stars is a down-home quality that makes it easier for fans to warm to. Players like Kobe and LaBron have a certain arrogance that turns some people off. Kobe's personal life and LaBron's controversial exit out of Cleveland didn't help their image any. Rose, Gordon and many of the newcomers the past few years have a persona, right or wrong, that is not widely accepted by the average NBA fan.

I'm not saying that's a perception shared by everyone, nor am I sure it's a fair appraisal of what I see in those players. My point is that I believe the typical NBA fan, who may not follow the game like we do, was ready for someone like Blake. For whatever reason, he has captured the imagination of the media like no one I've seen in years.

Ada,

Blake is extremely arrogant on the court. You are viewing him through crimson glasses. Not saying he's a bad arrogant, but his stare downs and temper are very aggressive. The media is embracing him because he's posterizing people with powerful sportscenter highlights. It has little if anything to do with where he is from.

This is slanderous and likely violates at least two of the Commandments on the third tablet that Mel Brooks dropped in the Hisotry of the World.

The difference is that he comes across as funny and light-hearted off the court. He is also respected for his work ethic. If someone like Cousins was seen doing the same things on the court, he would not likely be forgiven. Blake has an easy charm that can win over the harshest, most jaded critics.

Exactly.

:facepalm you are on a roll boca

if blake had a temper, he would be suspended everygame with the cheap shots he takes

By electricity, I meant that you know that pretty much every night he is physically going to do something that will make your jaw drop, similar to Jordan impact in first couple years with the Bulls IMHO.

Don't know if he'a arrogant but I know last year I tired of his whining and complaining. Usually one has to pay dues in the NBA before they are allowed to throw up their arms and facially contort on every call they don't like. At times he sort of reminds me what is status quo in the NFl - maening a WR actomatically turns his head for a flag whenever he doesn't catch a ball. Hopefully Blake will grow out of it or maybe some of these vets will tell him to chill.

Boca, I see emotion and intensity, not arrogance. An arrogant player would not have walked away smiling at the official's request, when Barnes intentionally shoved him from behind, or when McRoberts got in his face.

Sure I view Blake through crimson glasses. I won't deny that. But I think fans relate well to him, because they can see the same things I do. He's just a fun-lovin', likeable 22 year old from a small town in Oklahoma who happens to be Superman. ;)

Good points on Blake. No doubt his humble demeanor during interviews, and how he genuinely seems to appreciate his opportunities is a big selling point with casual fans, and people who are tired of the Kobe's and LaBron's of the world.

I personally think it sells with Blake, because it is who he is, and not a constructed image.... He is like a big kid playing the game he loves, and that is contagious.

An example of the opposite is one of my favorite players, Kobe. He had the reputation of being spoiled, selfish, etc... The Lakers hired two image improvement consultants to work with Kobe. One of the women spoke about the greatest issue they had to deal with was Kobe's filthy language. I mean this woamn said Kobe cussed worse than 10 sailors, and he often let them fly during practices and media events when young fans, women, and others were around. The organization knew he was very intelligent, and also very concerned about his image. They brought those people in to improve his public image, and Kobe accepted it and worked on it.

I told that story to say, though I love KB, I still believe the guy is a total jerk who couldn't care less about other people, including teammates, coaches, etc. He has LEARNED to present himself as a more humble guy who loves people, but just watch Kobe on the bench when LA struggles, and he does not know the camera is on him. He still pouts, cusses, and throws tantrums, he just learned to do it in a more obscure, controlled way. Many people see through the facade. Jordan is/was the exact same way......

Blake is just a good kid, not saying Kobe doesn't have many good qualities, but people naturally love a kid like Blake.......

The problem is. It could be argued, and has been argued by NBA analysts, that no one player has been cheap-shotted and beat on as much since maybe Shaq. The guy takes more abuse away from the ball than most players. The "paying dues" crap should end. That's the dumbest thing officials could do, IMO.

jmizzy, you already know that I have been a Laker fan since Jerry West was drafted in 1960. That did not change with Elgin, Magic, Kareem and a host of All-Stars who have worn Laker gold and purple the past fifty years or more. I'm a Kobe fan (the player not the person), too. But his antics the past few years have turned me off so much I have been close to switching my allegiance to another team. Truth is, it doesn't bother me anymore when the Thunder or the Clippers beat what was once my favorite NBA team.

Not that it would matter to Kobe, but he is to blame for that. Your description of the language and anger management counseling has done nothing but reinforce my opinion of him. You're right, he's a spoiled jerk, and a pefect example of the kind of player I was talking about.

I pretty much agree although sometimes in the regular season they don't play hard on defense. But in the playoffs it's all about defense.
