Blake tours Duke facilities, talks up Capel

Been said many times on here, Capel would be a great lead recruiter for a major program. Kids like him, families like him, he connects well with high school players given his background. That doesn't make him a great coach though. Coaching involves managing a program, something he has had trouble with the past couple years.

Lead recruiter? You want the guy who signed the following players to a scholarship to be your lead recruiter?

Nick Thompson
CJ Washington
Kyle Cannon
Orlando Allen
Ray Willis
Kyle Hardrick
Chris Early
Tony Neysmith
etc
so on
so forth

I mean, some of these guys are literally the worst players I have ever seen signed by a D1 school, which is especially bad considering OU is a top 25 program nationally.

You can add Warren, Tommy M-G, and Tiny to that list. I don't care how much talent someone thinks they had. They were cancer's on the program and couldn't beat anyone to boot.

Guess we'll have to see how he does at Duke and the revisit the question. Difference between head coach and recruiter, HC decides who to recruit and what positions to fill, recruiter develops relationship with player, family, other coaches to reel him in. The "managing" portion of the job is completely taken out of the picture. Will Capel do some talent evaluation? Sure, but the progressive decisions will lie with the HC, not the assisitant. Capel targeted the wrong guys, no doubt, but they had talent and wanted to play for Jeff. His errors are easily correctable.

We don't make the Elite Eight without Willie Warren.

You don't really know that. Wasn't it reported that he was a source of friction on that team all year. Especially between him and AJ. Who knows. Without him mayby it was a final 4 team. His true worth was displayed the following year. The record seems to indicate that worth was Zero. In business or sports or a sales staff, if your best talent is also the source of friction. They are never worth it. You always fire them.

Who we rolling out at the 2?

lol, sorry, just trying to imagine us play UNC during the Elite Eight w/o WW. We kept it closer than any other team in the tournament against them, less you forget, if not for WW we are blown out by halftime. Good chance if Blake doesn't get hurt we are a #1 seed and could have made a F4 run.

His true worth was displayed the following year.

You mean the one where he played hurt almost the entire season...on a team that started two freshman, both of which had attitude and off the court issues?

Actually TMG was the source of friction WW's last year. Not a WW apologist by any means, think he could have done more at his time here but was held back by injuries and ego. With that said, he gets an unfair rap, the issue with AJ was squashed after it came out and the team played great during conference. If Blake doesn't miss two crucial games, anything could have happened.

WW was a borderline lottery pick after his freshman season, anyone who followed him out of high school knew he was going to make the jump after his sophomore season, never intended to stay more than two years.

Geez. Willie Warren defenders coming out of the woodwork. The guy was a cancer on the program. As a soph. when he had the chance to step up a take abit of a leadership role, he never had any interest in so much as taking a defensive stance. Yes the kid had alittle talent. But, for his time here, he was a loser. He is in the NBA now. As a hanger on. He won't stick.

This is such a crap statement

:facepalm

Warren and those other two stooges are the personification of what is wrong with college basketball. Those AAU hotshots coming into a college program with a sense of entitlement is a bad thing.

Let me guess...you were born pre-1950?

I hesitate to speak for campbest but I think he's just saying there is a generational gap with this sort of thing. That is how I see it anyway.

I am personally not wild about everything that goes on on the AAU scene for various reasons, but I think a lot of the criticism paints with an awfully broad brush. YMMV.

Definitely put me in the camp that sees Willie Warren as being overly-criticized during his time at OU and since he left, though I know I have made my feelings very well known on this issue.

Let me guess you were born post 1985 and already know everything there is to know. Especially more than those that have more knowledge than you are yet to be exposed to.

Blake is an NBA player who is just seeing and enjoying the world.

No big deal.
