Brad Stevens waited for the right job.

He will still have his choice of college jobs after this doesn't work out.

I think the guy is a great coach. The Celtics will lose a bunch of games over the next few seasons, but in my opinion Stevens will be a good coach for a rebuild.

Holy crap. Talk about surprising.

The good thing about the C's hiring a young coach that might not be NBA ready, is that they can be patient with him b/c they won't have a winning roster for a few years. I definitely didn't see that coming.

NBA and patience with coaches in the same sentence? Surely you are joking!

Yep if he doesn't win after 2 years he'll be out of there in todays NBA. Maybe we could go for him after Lon retires in a couple years if he doesn't make it in the NBA?

He was given a 6 year deal. Unless he's a total disaster management will be more than patient while they rebuild. I love the hire.

I doubt the Celtics will be worse next season than they were this season at 41-40.

They get back their best player in Rondo. Jeff Green led them at 20 per game in the playoffs. Sullinger comes back. They will probably keep Gerald Wallace from the trade.

They are not going to suck. Rondo, Bradley, Lee, Jordan Crawford, Wallace, Green, Sullinger, Bass. The shelves aren't empty.

Why do you say it won't work out?

I personally don't think that it will work out, because the NBA, and many American professional leagues, use coaches as the scapegoat when fans get impatient for championships. While that's about how the college game is, the difference at the pro level is that players can get coaches fired a lot more easily and have more leverage.

So, Boston Celtic double-whammy --- they are a rebuilding team. And they have had (and likely will in the future have) players that can get their coach fired.

Also, coincidentally enough, the Celtics were the ones that tried and failed with a Rick Pitino experiment.

As a lifelong Celtics fan, all I can say is...they got 'em a teacher of young men to help the young guys, for relatively cheap, for a few years. If they can win - that's another story. I don't think they will suck near enough to get high lottery picks.

Their roster is not yet set, I don't think. Although personally, I wouldn't do it, you can't rule out Ainge trading Rondo. He might just reboot the whole thing.

A lot of good college coaches struggle with the move to the pro game. Larry Brown and John McCloud are the only two off the top of my head that I can recall that did well. I'm sure that there are others. But, my 1st impulse is that more fail than succeed.

Ainge has purposefully set up a roster that is destined to lose a lot of games the next couple years. The first few years, Ainge will judged Stevens by how well he develops his young players, and not so much by wins and losses. Ainge has a lot of job security. He can afford to be patient with a new coach.

Oh they will suck and they fully plan on sucking with a draft that may produce 3-4 stars. The prize is Wiggins, but in reality there are a couple more players that could come out of next year's draft that could be future All Stars. Boston knows this and wants one of them to build around. Stevens has no chance to win early. In the NBA you need players more than anything. Boston doesn't have them.

They aren't void of talent.

Rondo is a top 5 pg.

Bradley is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, and is a guy that has started at sg for Boston the better part of the last two years when healthy.

Green came on strong at the end of last year. I think he is a better scorer right now than Pierce is, given the age difference. Green was fantastic in the playoffs last year.

Sullinger was Boston's starting PF before his back gave out. If healthy, he might have been a top 5-10 pick in the draft. Kid can play.

Bass has started a lot of games for Boston. Lee had a down year last year but can shoot it. Olynyk can shoot it and create spacing.

What they are missing is defense in the paint, and the leadership of KG and PP. I'm actually worried that as the current roster stands, they won't suck enough. I don't see them as a bottom 10 team in the league. That is kind of why I hope they trade Rondo. Get some value, really commit to tanking, and rebuild in full.
