Senior guard Fuquan Edwin (6-6, 215) appeared in his 100th game for the Pirates, earning his 94th career start against Kent State on Wednesday. Edwin has played in every game of the Kevin Willard coaching era. He has not missed a start in the Pirates’ last 47 contests, a streak that began at Connecticut on Feb. 4, 2012. Edwin’s 19 points against the Golden Flashes marked his 65th double-digit scoring performance. It was the 13th time in the last 14 games he produced double-digits.
In his first collegiate start, red-shirt sophomore guard Sterling Gibbs (6-2, 185) erupted for another 20-point performance against Kent State on Wednesday, following his career-high 23 point effort in the season opener against Niagara. Gibbs is only the third Pirate in the last 10 years to begin a season with back-to-back 20-point efforts, joining Jeremy Hazell (2008-09) and Jordan Theodore (2011-12). Gibbs has converted 29-of-36 (80.6%) free-throw attempts. He also dished out a career-high six assists against the Golden Flashes.
SHU starters converted 31 of the team’s 32 free-throws on Wednesday versus Kent State with Sterling Gibbs (12-13) and Patrik Auda (7-7) leading the charge. It is the second straight game Seton Hall has hit 30+ free-throws. Prior to this season, the last time the Pirates sank 30 or more free-throws in a game was March 9, 2010 versus Providence.
Seton Hall has won five of its last six non-conference road games, including the last two at Wake Forest (71-67, Dec. 2, 2012) and LIU Brooklyn (89-58, Dec. 22, 2012). Head coach Kevin Willard is 5-2 at Seton Hall in non-conference road games.
Seniors Fuquan Edwin and Brian Oliver (6-7, 225) converted six of the Pirates’ eight three-pointers on Wednesday against Kent State. Edwin hit three in the first half, while Oliver buried his three in the second half. Last season, Edwin and Oliver combined for 105 of the teams 261 three-point field goals (40.2%).
