They aren't being hired. They are given something on potential that has nothing to do with their "job". They are there to go to school. They are paying for that by putting in some work. How hard is that to understand? How loud will you cry when there's a 20% cut in athletic scholarships across the country because of this selfishness? If that many students miss out on an education because you and the 1% of all athletes undervalued the return you were getting, is that acceptable? Athletes as a general rule, are some of the worst students in the entire University, yet they get the most perks, and that's not good enough? 99% have little to no value to a university and you know it.
I'm all for raising the NCAA Clearinghouse requirements on high school seniors, sounds like a great idea.
Do you think these schools and ADs are going to be on board with that?
Who said anything about making it tougher to get an available scholarship? There will just be fewer to give all because kids that more than likely don't stay in school 4 years or apply themselves for the short time they are there, want some new headphones.
You're being dishonest now. You TRULY want there to be less access to education? You realize crime will rise. We're not talking about kids with great home life and guidance here. I promise, the screams will be deafening if that happens. You'll be on here telling us that the school's are just being selfish.
Investing in education shouldn't start on a college scholarship, at that point for most it's too late, as you said the statistics back it up once athletes are on campus.
The brick and mortal university model will deflate or bust eventually. Accessibility to education is the greatest it's ever been, I could go online and essentially take MBA level interactive courses for free from MIT, Columbia, Yale, Cal-Berkeley, etc. An undergrad degree has essentially become what a HS diploma was 30 years ago, outside of a few majors, it means nothing. Know a guy who's daughter went to SMU and graduated with a PR degree...what a terrible investment.
The example you pointed out on education and crime, I agree with. But you don't solve that problem by throwing money at the university level, it has to happen (much) before. That's more of a political topic, so I will abstain.
Just curious... is there anything stopping athletes from taking out large loans now? Or their families?
There's precedent --- students and their families take out thousands of dollars of loans to pay for their educational expenses.
I don't know why some of you are still trying to stick up for the $50K loan idea. It's a terrible idea and should NOT be considered in any way, shape or form. Many of you have said that a lot of these kids have access to pell grants, meaning they come from families that don't have many resources. The worst thing you can do is drop a $50K pile of cash on a 18 year old's front door. Do any of you thin ka penny of this would be spent wisely?? I have seen what happens when broke people get big income tax returns...they blow it on stupid, uneccesary crap. You think any of these kids would invest some of it or even budget appropriately? NO!! All that would happen would be they start off life $50K in the hole with nothing but maybe a back full of tats to show for it. Terrible idea!
The ultimate big brother post. 100% absolutely none of your business.

I agree, but kids like we're talking about, you know the one's who currently think they should be paid, don't get the guidance they need. That's never going to change. Even poor students are better off in the university environment than they would be if that opportunity weren't afforded them. All this is going to do is directly harm the kids it's believed to help. Adrian Peterson will get his full ride, but Quentin Griffin won't. All because Ad is too dumb and selfish to realize the value of what he got. I love Ad, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say he has no concept of the value of an education OR the very money the university helped him make.
Its also a bad idea for an English or Arts major to take out $50,000 a year for four or five years in student loans, but thousands do it every year.
So we aren't allowed to worry about what a kid will do with money but we are suppose to supply them with it and help out anyone who needs it? Can't have it both ways. Don't say stay out of my business and then ask for handouts
Psst, they don't have their entire education paid for...
And most of them will never make enough to get out of debt. So we are saddling them with debt for the rest of their lives. What is the difference between their debt and an athletes?
OU took advantage of him.
Getting an advance on an inevitable contract is not a handout. And what business is it of yours what Johnny Manziel does with money that Wells Fargo agrees to loan him? It's so funny to watch people twist themselves into a pretzel. They don't want big brother for themselves, but for everybody else it's OK, especially minority athletes.
AD did not attend OU for an education and OU did not bring in AD to be a student. They brought him in to sell tickets and gain TV viewers. Period. He came in to showcase his skills for the NFL. Period.
Here's what AD knows. His agent and the players union watch out for his interest. OU took advantage of him. Why would he care if 20% of athletes can only receive scholarship based on his his ability? Why should they be allowed to suck on his tit?
