I always liked his game. Sure would like to see him & Buddy out there terrorizing opposing guards.

Eh. I think he got off to a hot start last season too, but ended up with pretty mediocre numbers.

Would have been good for what he was; instant offense off the bench. Onward and upward.

That was such a weird transfer. Wasn't he one of the team leaders in scoring at 20 or so minutes a game when he quit?

too bad he was the team cancer.... oh well.

Was he or did he just want a different role than what coach Kruger wanted him to have? Kruger was playing him a lot for a "cancer". I suspect if he was a cancer he would not have played a single minute for coach Kruger. You have to recognize that coach Kruger is not trying to be friends with these guys and will run this basketball team even if it means OU loses every game on the schedule.

yes. Averaged 13 minutes a game as a freshman and 20 as a sophomore early in the season.

He quit on us when he was an integral part of OUr team and he was badly needed ,so I personally don't give a rat's rear end what he does.

I prefer the quitters that leave over the quitters that stay.

Never has one player done less, and received so much.........

He would be a good addition to this team. To bad he transferred.

What I remember is that Newell wanted the guarantee of a starting spot if he stayed, and Kruger wouldn't give it to him. I can't be certain that's what happened, or if there was more to the story than what was reported back then?

All I know is that nothing about Calvin leaving made sense to me. He was playing starter-like minutes, and he was a major contributor that year with the spark he provided on offense coming off of the bench. He could have really helped the team if he had stayed.

It's good to know he's doing well. Best of luck to him!

I agree, Ada. He was playing starter minutes but wanted to be a starter. Period. And when he saw he wan’t going to be, decided to transfer. I also think while he was a major contributor on Offense in the early season and on a team with some offensive struggles, he was also about himself more than being a team player. I also remember at the early season tournament ( can’t recall which one it was that year)…that when the tv camera showed him sitting in the stands before our game was sitting alone and not with the other players. That right there was telling to me. I remember that when he transferred thinking it would hurt us some that year but not so much for the next season and after with guys we had coming in. I would like to have seen it work out with him but not with his attitude and being more about himself than being a team player and contributor. Too selfish imo. Too bad cuz he could have been a nice piece and that could have been/would have been the difference in our falling short of the tourney that year and def finishing over 500 and going dancin’. Just my 2 centos.

APPARENTLY HE IS HAVING ISSUES AT UCF AS WELL.i FLIPPED PAST TONITE'S GAME VS RUTGERS JUST AS THEY SAID THAT NEWELL HAD BEEN LEFT HOME BY THE COACH. HIS PRODUCTION HAD DROPPED AS THE SEASON WENT ON.LAST I CHECKED HE WAS SHOOTING 43% FG ,26%,3PT,59.7%FT,AND HAD NEARLY AS MANY TO'S AS ASSIST(3.1/2.7).i guess THERE WAS A REASON LON RELEASED HIM.

No surprise, really. When a player gives a coach a choice of promising him a starting position or give him his release, only a fool would make that promise.

Calvin obviously didn't fit in or a savvy coach like Kruger would have found a way to make it work. Looks like he had it right. Too bad, too, because he had a lot of potential.

Did he do that? I don't recall that being said when he transferred.
