Both about 6'0'' or 6'1'', very good scorers, not point guards but can play it, quick, athletic.

Now, JR hit 95 3's in his junior year (2000) and hit 41%. That is a great season for anyone. But, Calvin looked like he is gonna be a good shooter. He knocked down 3-6 from out there and had 13 points in his first game.

Probably not identical players, but Calvin seems like the closest thing to JR Raymond that OU has had since.

What do you guys think of the comparison?

I can see some similarities in their games. Both are shooting guards/scoring guards trapped in a point guard's body. Both can score from all three levels on the court. Both have the ability to put up big numbers in any given game.

As you mentioned, J.R. Raymond was probably a more polished shooter from three point range. Calvin Newell is showing himself to be the better defender at this time.

That's exactly what I thought the first time I saw Newell play. Don't know if he's as good as JR yet, but like the comparison.

Haven't seen enough of Calvin yet, but I can see the comparison. JR is sort of a forgotten guy, but he was really good.

calvin is bigger and already a much better defender ...

it remains to be seen if he can get hot and light it up like JR could at times

JR was a fearless shooter. I still remember a game against Texas Tech where we were up a couple of points in the final minute, we bring the ball on up after a rebound and he took a 3 from the corner. I was like wtf are you doing then he drained it LOL. Im sure Sampson would have choked him if he misses that shot.

Calvin is a great kid. I highly doubt he ends up like JR off the court and I think he could be better that JR on the court.
