Is he going to start at the 2? Who else do we have that can guard the other teams 2?

I think he's going to seriously push Pledger. Pledge might be best suited to come off the bench shooting.

Actually I just watched the practice videos for the first time. Looks like Cade might play the 2 with Clark at the 3.

Newell
Davis
Clark
Fitz
Thompson

That might be our best lineup.

Everything depends on how he comes along. I see him playing both the two and three. In football terms is there were a two deep he probably would be the backup for Blair and Pledger. If he struggles coming out of the gate, Cade will be the backup at two and the starter at the three.

Are there any other fans who think this guy might be a really huge bright spot on our roster this year? The guy just looks huge and physical and has those crazy terrell everett cashed eyes.

I firmly believe he is the real deal. The only caveat I have regards his ability to conform to a system and integrate his offensive skills within those parameters to help his team win games. I've seen nothing to suggest he won't be able to do just that, but I know from personal experience just how hard it is to accomplish. Most newcomers, freshman and transfers, struggle with it.

Here's what I posted back in may, in response to Sam's post about who the leading scorer of this year's team will be:

"If Newell is the starting PG for most of the year or gets most of the crunch-time minutes at the 1, he'll lead this team in scoring. Everything I've read leads me to believe his capacity for scoring is extremely high and is diverse in nature.

In a situation with no clear-cut, go-to guy offensively, a player controlling the ball is typically way more likely to be aggressive than those who play off the ball and typically only touch it within the structure of the offense.

That said, unless someone steps into that go-to role for us during the summer and the time leading up to first practice, I put my money on a guy like Newell. The guy has averaged 29.4 pts and 26.1 pts a game the last two seasons in high school and prep school, respectively.

Even if you're playing really weak competition, there is a mentality that goes into being a consistent volume scorer. He certainly seems to have that, as well as a fairly well-rounded skill set. If he gets major minutes, and until someone with a more big-time offensive game that better translates to long-term, high-level success (read: Cameron Clark) steps up; I say watch out for Newell as the leading scorer."

After seeing the posted videos and hearing many of the comments coming from coaches and teammates, I'd say there's nothing to make me feel differently some 5 months later.

My concern about Newell is will he be in scoring mode too much for a pg. If he's in scoring mode and he's effective at scoring mode, why not play him at the SG. I would prefer to see him at the point though, because of his ability to put pressure on the defense from the point guard position.

I think we'll see a lot of Newell and Blair together like AJ and WW. Having two ball handlers on the floor will be a bonus when OU goes small. Smaller actually...

Having not seen him in a single live game under game conditions, I don't really know which would be his best position. What I do know is it is VERY hard to defend at the 2 with 2 strikes against you (1 - he's inexperienced, and 2 - he's short for the position).

At this young stage (both of this season and of his career), I'd settle for his being productive on the offensive end, regardless of what position it comes from. I think we will NEED scoring this season, and I think we'll need it in a big way. I can see us scoring in the 50's in some of the tougher non-conference and early conference season games this season.

If that's the case, it could prove too tall an order for our defense, as defense is a part of the game where experience, communication, and teamwork really come into play. I believe we'll need to score easily in spots to make up for our inexperience and lack of time together on the defensive end. At least, like I said, in the early going.

Back to Ben's question, that's why I think Newell can really step in and fill a perceived void and be a really bright spot this season. Time will tell, but young, inexperienced teams are rarely able to hang their hats on good team defense. I hope the 2010-11 version of the Sooners can be the exception, but...

The most I am hoping for is a contribution similar to that of Bobby Maze as a freshman. Good offensive player, but evens out the pros with some plays that are out of control. Calvin may be a little more polished at this point, but I just want to see it for myself.
