Looks to me that the costs will be almost the same to let Capel go this year as it would to let him go next year. Money won't be the issue. I put in a million for a new coach (could be cheaper Evans or more expensive).

Capel Contract:

2010 1.5 Million
2011 1.5 Million
2012 1.5 Million
2013 1.5 Million
2014 1.5 Million 1.1 Stay bonus
2015 1.5 Million
2016 1.5 Million .4 Stay bonus

2011 Buyout .250 *5 = 1.25 + .75 (Half of Stay Bonuses 1.5) = Cost = 2 Million

2012 Buyout .250*4 = 1.00 + .75 (Half of Stay Bonuses 1.5) = Cost = 1.75 Million

Fire Capel in 2011
2011 Hire New Coach - Cost - 1 Million + 2 Million (Capel Buyout) Total costs = 3 Million

Fire Coach in 2012
2012 Hire New Coach - Cost - 1 Million + 2 Million (Capel Buyout) Total costs = 2.75 Million

Sure is a lot of money when the basketball program doesn't bring in enough to break even. Guess it is a good thing we are a football school....

I don't really understand how we don't make any money from basketball when all the tickets are sold, and the year we had BG how many national appearances did we make? The Big 12 tv contract for basketball must be really poor.

something isn't adding up.

From my perspective, it would have been better to take that $2mil and pay a better coach more money 5 years ago than to pay $2mil to get rid of one now.
Hopefully Joe learned a lesson.

I received a letter back in 08 that outlined how each sport was doing financially and men's basketball was actually slightly in the green with BG which is why I am assuming the last two years has been in the red because it has been noticeably different with fans in the seats, games on prime channels, and post season play to name a few. I've been trying to research on the net some more current stats but I suppose it is only something sent out to donors.

Could be wrong after I find some legitimate data.

That he should do a better job of predicting the future? If he really could see the future, he would have kept Capel for years 1-3 and then brought someone in after the elite-8 run.

The problem wasn't hiring Capel in the first place, it was giving him the ridiculous extension after year 3. In Joe's defense, OU had improved dramatically each year under Capel and looked poised for another run in year 4, before the world came crashing down.

It's not like Joe didn't go after guys like Jay Wright 5 years ago. It was just tough to get those types of guys to come in with the uncertainty of NCAA Sanctions hanging over the program.

You believe Joe made a serious attempt to hire Jay Wright?

You don't?

I don't.

I think he only made a serious attempt at Auriemma but made overtures to Turgeon and maybe 1 other candidate before focusing on Capel.

Wright may have received a phone call from somebody representing OU as in a 3rd party, but it stopped there.

The better question is why the hell would Jay Wright leave Villanova for Oklahoma?
