Capel making all the right moves.

wow............
you give me 4 monkeys and ill bring blake and they'll get to the tourney

Stupid statement. We won 12 games last year by 11 points or less and 10 of those were by single digits. I know Blake was hurt for a game or two, but take Blake out of those and we have a tough time getting into the tournament.

Take Austin or Taylor out, and we have a tough time, also.

We should just hire Kelvin again...oh, wait, maybe not. Some of you goobers still think that he got fired or something.

The fact that Kelvin screwed up doesn't mean that Capel is doing a good job. The only thing that they have to do with each other is to show just how unsuccessful Capel has been w/o Blake. Jeff may have NCAA issues of his own to deal with by the time this is over, so you may want to temper the Kelvin bashing.

Just to add for the Jeff will never be "better" than Kelvin...Jeff hired Kelvin's son. Seriously. He hired Kelvin's son to be a coach on his staff. You want to talk about the ultimate sign of respect to a person, that is the absolute best that Jeff could do. Where was Kellen during all of this nonsense last season?

Ummm, there was a U-turn somewhere I must have missed; becuase pointing out that Kelvin voluntarily LEFT OU is not bashing anyone, it is telling the truth.

OU is farther now from the Big 12 title race than at any other point I can remember. To suggest the opposite is silly.

Yeah, we were much closer when we lost Everett, Gray and Bookout, Sampson got caught cheating and we were put on probation, only to have him get hired away from Indiana causing our entire recruiting class to bolt.

Shouldn't you be planning a vacation to Gilligans Island next March to "miss" Self getting embarrassed by another Bucknell, Bradley or Northern Iowa? ha ha ha ha

Kellen is only a GA, this has nothing to do with him. Kellen is a good kid who wants to coach someday and loves the University and Norman.

I would live for the days when OU gets embarassed by Manhatten, Indiana State, UM-Wisc and other teams at least we were making the tournament and competing in Big 12 play every year. I'm sorry that I don't like not even being an NIT team 2 of the 4 years Jeff has been here. I'm a bad fan.

Sorry if we got crossed, this thread is jumping so much I'm starting to go cross-eyed. My only point is that we are most likely going to be the worst team in the conference and this is because of the decisions that Jeff made, whether they are staff or recruiting mistakes. We are getting more behind in the talent race each and every day and there does not appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel. If Jeff survives this I will be stunned, though I hope he does. I just have a feeling that next year is doomsday for Jeff and it looks ugly.

And yet, he's still here, trying to recruit and right the ship...more than what Kelvin did for the University of Oklahoma IMHO. Oh and with Kelvin and Karen Sampson's so on the staff getting paid.

:ez-roll: If Jeff had a shot at a major basketball job right now he would be long gone. Just because Jeff is stuck here doesn't mean he is staying in order to make things right. If Wake would have called and offered him the job, he'd be long gone. IMHO.

Gotcha.

I think we are on the same side of this, but I'm not sure.

I think what he was saying is that all you need is Blake and you will have success. It's just not true. Blake is a game-changer, but he has to have a supporting cast, he cannot win games by himself, and thinking so is silly.

The OU basketball program is not free falling. It was free falling when he took it over. He did a masterful job in his first 3 years of getting it back on track.

In his 4th year he hit a small bump in the road due to a lack of talented upperclassmen, too many inexperienced or over recruited underclassmen, magnified by some chemistry issues between the most talent underclassmen and devastated by mono and a season ending injury to by far the best player on the team.

Now imagine Capel was not heading into his 5th year, imagine he was a newly hired head coach. Every move would be applauded. Ray Willis and Big O are not good enough to contribute to a winning team in the Big XII, so they are gone. TMG, did not want to be a student athlete, he is gone. Tiny Gallon might have been involved with a financial advisor and an assistant coach might be implicated. An investigation ensues and the assistant coach is gone and Tiny's status is up in the air.

Meanwhile, Capel has some nice recruits coming in and has his head down working on a couple more to fill the gaps. Exactly what he should be doing and based on his past performance, OU will be right in the thick of the Big XII title chase sooner rather than later.

I like your postitive spin and what not however, if you talk to someone close or inside the program you would go out and get drunk. This is a train wreck and if a coach was involved with Tiny getting money Capel is screwed.

Yes Big O is leaving

What we had last year was a great defense and Blake Griffin. If Blake returned this year we just have Blake Griffin. With the terrible defense part Blake doesn't look quite as good. And AJ is lighting it up over seas.

And Jeff doesn't?

Jeff's getting paid to make sure that things are done correctly by his staff and players. He is also being paid to make sure his team is successful. Kellen is getting paid a small stipend to do what he is told by Jeff and to learn the game. He is at the bottom of the totem pole. My point is that Kellen shouldn't be pulled into this until he does something wrong.

I like Jeff Capel but the current mess is ALL Jeff Capel. Sampson is long. long gone.

Capel turned the corner so fast with Blake that everyone got a false sense of security.

Capel has not recruited well, other than Blake. His recruits have been either (A) not near good enough to compete at a Big 12 level and have not developed into Big 12 caliber players OR (B) talented players that on the surface don't seem to want to be team players and are using OU only as a stepping stone to the NBA.

Make excuses all you want but it's his mess and he has to clean it up or he won't have a job, imo.

He still got a job from Jeff Capel after HIS FATHER WAS IMPLICATED BY THE NCAA; name another guy in the country that would have done the same. How sad that some want to compare a quitter and a cheat to a guy whom, to date, has only been indicted in having a crappy season.
