Smart move. He's in a great position right now coaching with K at Duke & team USA with the best players in the world. Much better gig than begging top 50 recruits to come to Tempe knowing they won't.

I'm a little surprised. ASU would be a relatively tough place to win, living in Arizona ' s shadow, but I disagree that he can do a lot better. He is at Duke but he's still the same guy who -- and I hesitate to do this because of what it will start -- let's just say his tenure at OU didn't end well, with losing seasons, a mass exodus of players, and NCAA sanctions.

He won't do much better than a PAC-12 job.

Good for Capel. Sounds like he is coming around to the idea that he sucks as a head coach, and he should ride the coattails of Coach K and the Duke name as high as they will take him.

ASU is more than a small step down from OU. Coach Capel likely knew that it would be a tough place to win at. Smart move staying put. It will bother some people on this board, but he will get a better offer than ASU.

Those ASU coeds are dynamite. That is a tough one to pass up.

I think it would be wonderful if Capel was hired to be head coach of KU.

LOL!...and I'm more pro-Capel than anti-Capel. I think Boca would be the only OU fan on the planet who would have nightmares of Capel coaching at KU.

Capel is telling people he'll be the next coach at Duke.

I think its comical that people still think he cant coach. The greatest coach in CBB history holds his coaching ability in high regard. He made mistakes here, but they were mostly around the realities of recruiting to OU.

Raw talent-wise, he might have had one of the most talented teams OU has ever put on the court in 09-10, and he coached them to the worst record in the last 30+ years of OU basketball.

Yep! Probably the first team ever to have three "Burger Boys" (three McDonald's All-Americans) on the roster to get only 13 wins.

I do often wonder which of the three was the "worst of the worst," behind the scenes. I didn't live in Oklahoma then, so I honestly don't know.

yep. He brought in some high talented guys that had character issues. He missed on some lesser talents.

I don't think he is a great coach by any means but he was young and is learning behind the best. He will be fine. He can relate to kids. You can be dumb as a rock but still pick up pieces to be successfull when your mentor is one of the best at their job in the history of the job

if Capel's going to coach again, he needs a stellar set of assistant coaches.

Head Coach Jeff Capel at OU:

2006-07 .... 16-15 (6-10)
2007-08 ... 23-12 (9-7) .... NCAA 2nd Round
2008-09 .... 30-6 (13-3) .... NCAA Elite-8
2009-10 .... 13-18 (4-12) .... 13 Wins later Vacated - NCAA Violations
2010-11 .... 14-18 (5-11)

Big-12 Record .... 36-41

Very best wishes to Jeff Capel. It is wonderful that he is successful as a Duke assistant coach. Jeff is better off at Duke. OU is better off now that that Jeff is at Duke. That is a win-win.

If Capel is going to be successful, he's going to have to learn that Duke isn't the only place they play basketball. His attitude about OU and the way he fit in at OU was his biggest problem.

People grow. People learn. If he grew and learned from his time at OU, he might have a chance. If not, he will fail in his next venture as well.

His next venture as a head coach may be Duke.
