Capel told ASU no

He must be convinced he will get the Duke job. He could get it from ASU but he would have to be successful which isn't guaranteed.

Based on his track record versus others with Duke background I would be shocked if he got the job. I don't like Duke so it is good for the rest of competitive basketball programs if he does though.

I admire the Duke basketball program and I admire Coach K. They are winners, and win the right way (as far as I know). Their players either graduate, or go pro. I think it would be fun for OU to play Duke. You can't beat 'em if you don't play 'em.

My dislike for some teams is based on my personal experience with their fan base. The only experience I've had with Duke fans was at the 1988 Final-4. They seemed OK to me, but that was a long time ago.

My days of disliking a team just because they are really good have passed with my youth.

It is amazing that 68 year-old Mike Krzyzewski has coached at one school since the 1980-81 season, which was the first season that Billy Tubbs coached at OU.

This.

You are exactly right about the talent level. You are wrong about all we need to know.

What we need to know and what we do know is what he did here. He, due to his arrogance, alienated the fan base, the media, the alumni, donors, the administration, and athletic support staff. He was lazy. He never made it into the basketball office till after 9:00.

He dismantled and discredited a proud basketball program and left us on probation. The Capel hire was a mistake.

It did not work out, but it was not a mistake.

I can't speak to some of the things you're saying, as my limited personal experiences with him were positive. Also not buying the lazy thing one bit. So coach K has a lazy assistant in a favored position? I have a feeling that doesn't happen.

My point is that that Coach K references are meaningless because OU has their own experiences and reference point. He may be a good employee now. He was a lousy head man here. How anyone that claims to be a fan or supporter of OU basketball can defend this guy at any level is a mystery to me.

I think people are blinded by hatred for him because the program tanked under his watch, and people aren't happy about it. Not saying that's you, as I dont' see you repeatedly ranting about him like others on here do.

There's a reason Boca starts these threads, and it's because a bunch of posters on here come close to stroking out every time Capel is mentioned.

It was a mistake. The numbers speak for themselves.

Every coach from MacLeod through Kruger (7 coaches) were able to win more than 50% of their conference games except Jeff Capel.

Kruger has made the NCAA 75% of the time. Sampson made the NCAA Tournament 91.66% of the time. Tubbs made the NCAA Tournament 71% of the time. Capel made the NCAA Tournament 40% of the time. Even worse, he didn't even take the team to the NIT the years he missed the NCAA Tournament.

It is not hatred, it is simply a fact that he did a horrible job at OU. Boca prompt this fool and insult Sampson. Look at the freaking numbers. Capel's performance is not even worthy of being in the same discussion as Sampsons.

Agreed it wasn't a mistake. You can't call it a mistake only b/c it didn't work out. There was nobody more excited about the Capel hire than I was. I thought it was exactly what OU needed to do to get over the hump and possibly take the next step. Hire a young, up and coming coach, that related well with the top athletes, and came from a basketball program like a Duke. On paper, it was perfect.

Just b/c Capel failed, doesn't mean the decision making process in hiring him was faulty. Plenty of good AD's and good programs hire coaches that don't work out. If anybody knew what coaches would work out and what coaches wouldn't, they'd be able to make billions. But we don't know until they get a chance. So all you can do is do the homework, and make educated hires. I think Joe C. did that with Capel. Just didn't work out.

The results don't dictate whether it was a mistake or not. I can jump off a building and by some miracle live to tell about it. Living doesn't make me jumping off that building any less stupid.

Except Joe C. couldn't have had any idea how well Capel related to "top" athletes. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall a long list of four-stars and burger boys on his teams at VCU.

And as it turned out, he "related" to our "top" athletes all too well, letting them do pretty much whatever they wanted, with no risk whatsoever of losing any playing time.
