Central Arkansas game gives me hope

OU barely beat a 4-9 team playing its first year of D1 ball... How does that give you hope?

If you want to use every little negative thing that you can find to try to bury the current coach, nothing will give you hope.

If you want this team and these players to be the best they can be and let the chips fall where they may regarding coaching decisions, you can find hope when they play hard and play as a team.

It really depends upon your perspective and your personal agenda.

Very well said. It has become painfully obvious that some have gotten so mad/negative towards our coach, that they live to see us lose so that they can pound their chests on the board. Reminds me of the Sampson lynchmob. Sad really..........:facepalm:facepalm

I would have played the traditional line-up with CJ and Fitz as posts. Then occasionally substitute Honore or Thompson for foul trouble or some breather.
We can't have our guard get beat up pushing and shoving inside that they ran out of breath/tire to produce on the offensive end. I hope we don't ever have another coach from the Duke coaching tree, they tend to play with the 4 guard line-up but the only reason they win is because they are all top notch talent. We don't have that kind of talent to play 4 guard line-up.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. I just don't believe this group provides many options. I would love to see CJ play more, but the other post players have not earned any time, IMO. I bet that we get to see alot of both during conference.......

Wrong again. There is no personal agenda against current coach. You guys just accept mediocrity then be it. How can you have hope when in just five years we went from the top 3 in the big 12 to near the bottom of it? Please take a loot at Missouri, do you think Capel can take that same team and have them rank in the top 10? In college, coaching makes a lot of different.
Please accept that our coach is not good. How can OU just barely compete and hang on with mid major? That's sad.

I care about Oklahoma basketball more than I would like to admit, and I desperately want to see this program succeed. The only agenda I have is OU winning basketball games. When I watch this team play, the only thing I feel is despair and sadness. That we have to scramble to beat a team like this is just lousy. There is no way around it.

Central Arkansas shot 54% from the field. If this is a tremendous defensive effort, we are in bigger trouble than even I think. Those of you who can be encouraged by tonight's game are better people than I. I have no problem admitting that. I'm trying to be a more positive person but it's hard for me to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Cameron Clark does provide real reason for hope.

I am deathly afraid this team is going to get absolutely smoked on a regular basis in conference play.

I understand the frustration with negativity on the board, but wondering how much hope we are to take from a three-point win at home over a weak opponent is hardly the same as "living to see us lose."

I'm really happy we won -- I am resolved to enjoy every single win, no matter the margin or opponent -- but being happy we won and thinking the victory is a sign of good things to come are two very different things. We have very few remaining opponents of a talent level similar to CentArk's. The level of play that earned us a three-point win over CA will likely yield a double-digit loss to most of our remaining opponents, especially on the road.

That's not to say we won't get better than we were tonight, but it'll have to be a LOT better and I think it's perfectly reasonable to question what it was about tonight's win that gave some a warm and fuzzy feeling (aside from simply being happy we won, which I certainly am, too).

Thanks for proving my point. You are so blind with your Capel hatred/rage, you missed the entire point of my post. never did I say one word about being satisfied with losing, but because I didn't join you in ripping our coach, you ASSumed that I'm satisfied, mediocre, etc......

I can see the problems and struggles as well or better than you and the others who choose to bash Capel in every thread.

I personally CHOOSE to take the same approach that I did with Tubbs, KS, Switzer, Bliss, Blake, etc... I will support my guys and cheer for my guys no matter who is coaching. I will not waste my time *****ing about a coach in every thread, when my *****ing changes nothing. Once the admin who is paid alot more than me to make coaching decisions, makes a decision to change coaches, I will immediately begin to cheer for and support that coach, because he or she just became a part of the University that I love.

That is just my personal option, and that is why I commented on what Ms Proud said. She and I have posted together on numerous boards, so she knew what I meant. This is the same thing that ruined the board during sampson's last yr. We would win a game 56-47, and all that you would see on the board was thread after thread *****ing about how Sampson's teams don't have an offensive system, and how we would never win a title as long as KS was the coach. It became like a cancer on the board, just like the 10000000000000 I hate Capel comments and threads. I just don't choose to support my school that way, but to each his own.....

I know where you stand Sky. I wasn't talking about your comments. I don't care about how each poster chooses to vent, because I just do like I did with the cletus vs pumper crap, and leave the board. Everyone has the right to be as happy or unhappy as they choose. I just don't thrive in an environment that seems to have gotten so negative, that anyone who chooses to make a positive comment gets blasted. That is when I find something to replace my 10-30 minutes that I spend on the board each week.

Like the NBA board!!!! I just go hang out over there.....:D:D

'You guys just accept mediocrity' is nonsense. These guys are our players and as long as they give 100%, do their best and keep improving, they deserve support. Personally, I find this year's team much easier to support than last year's team.

These issues are separate from questions about Capel as a coach. What is truly sad is that some of you are so negative about him that you can't compliment a player on a good individual performance or compliment the team on good team defense.

Our players show much more maturity in this situation than most posters on this board. The situation is what it is and no decisions will be made by us. They players realize this and are focused on their team and nothing else. We should try to emulate them.

Fortunately, that's not a world most of us want to live in. There are times when I predict "gloom and doom" and I couldn't possible be happier when I'm wrong. It never dawned on me to root against my team so that I can be "right" on a message board. There was actually an OU fan on OUInsider who predicted Sam Bradford would be a huge bust in the NFL. Rather than simply admitting he was wrong, he kept taking digs at him every chance he got...little does he realize that Sam's success will steer future 5-star QBs toward Norman...apparently, he'd rather be "right" on a message board.

As for the game, I can't say there was anything tonight that would give me additional "hope" for this season. I already knew Clark was going to be a very good player...who didn't? We shot the ball well, but could not put away a 4-8 team due to defensive breakdowns. I'd like to see us blow out Maryland Eastern-Shore by putting together both a great offensive and defensive effort. We need "some" momentum heading into conference play.

Do you think John Blake would get fire and we would hire Stoop if all OU fans take your approach and support the team no matter what during the Blake's years?

I don't see anybody bashing players. What we are bashing is the style of play and the inconsistent substitution that put our players at a disadvantage?
How can you let a 6'5 guard getting beat up by a 6'9 post player? I am bashing the coaching system and not the players. I see a certain poster bashing Fitz, etc and said that they are supporting the players, team.

You don't seem to understand that there is a difference between supporting the team and players and supporting the coach. If you think that Joe C. and the powers that be aren't aware of unhappiness with Capel, you are very naive.

I have much more admiration for the fans that continue to support the team in the bad times than I do for Message Board posters who nitpick every negative thing they can find in the hope the coach will be fired. Nothing anyone on any message board says has any bearing on Capel's future at OU.

Seriously?? Bashing Fitz???:facepalm I love the kid!!! Just pointed why I believe he struggles on defense. I never bashed the kid. Geez.....With all due respect Test, it appears that you just want a message board argument. There are alot of posters who would LOVE to engage you. I'm not one of them, so have a nice night, and have a Safe and Happy New Year. At the end of the day, we are all Sooners, so that is enough for me.

In fact yes he would have. Any coach who doesn't beat Texas/OSU/Play for titles won't coach at OU very long no matter how many people support him.

See Gary Gibbs.......

I guess I don't see anything wrong with being honest. And honestly this team doesn't seem to be getting any better. A three point win over another D1 bottom feeder does nothing to show we've improved one iota. That's a problem. Unless this team somehow magically improves overnight we are in for an immense amount of pain come time for conference play.

that we will be better than we have shown. I guess the pundits were right. Not having enough practices early put us behind. The Christmas break gave enough time to have some concentrated work and the results showed defensively especially. I like it.

Missouri beat this same CARK team that you are so excited about us beating
116 - 63 only a week ago.

I am literally stunned that so many people watched that game and came out feeling good about OU basketball.. That was a back and forth game, with late ties, and that team was constantly within 1,2,3 points or tied all the way till the end.

It was like an NCAA Tournament game between two really good teams, only it was a 4-9 Central Arkansas team playing its first year of D1 basketball vs a 7-6 OU team having its worst season since the 1950's.

Not only that, OU had to shoot 61% from the field and 53% from the 3pt line, AND get a career performance out of Cameron Clark to beat them. OU played its best game of the year and that team was playing with OU the entire way.

Hope? Really? I am not on the "Fire Capel" bandwagon but I do not get any hope from this game, other than Cam continuing to play better. Central Arkansas will most likely finish last in the Southland Conference. A 76-73 win over a team like that hardly makes me bubble over with hope.

I think we played fairly well on offense. We turned it over a bit too much. Defense still needed work. But if we play a style like this I think we would see far less complaining on this board.
