Ana Llanusa hasn’t shared the court with Taylor Roberts since middle school.
Two of the state’s top players had grown up together on the court during their early AAU days. Tuesday night, they met for the first time in their high school careers.
And five minutes into Class 6A No. 2 Choctaw’s 64-53 win over previously undefeated Class 4A No. 3 Classen SAS, Llanusa was pumping her fist and yelling to motivate her teammates.
“We wanted it a lot,” Llanusa said. “We knew that we were going to have some competition, and it was just fun playing against a good team. It was exciting.”
Roberts scored 36 points to add to her march for the state’s 5-on-5 scoring record. The senior guard now has 3,166 career points, which is 210 points shy of the record.
Meanwhile, Llanusa, who has signed with Oklahoma, finished with 22 points behind eight points in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory.
“They’re two of the best that Oklahoma has to offer,” Choctaw coach Ryan Maloney said. “I think (Classen SAS is) going to be a dangerous team, but when you have Ana Llanusa, for me, I wouldn’t trade her for any player in the state.”
While Llanusa played well down the stretch, it was her teammates who provided the big boost.
Her little sister, Aliyah, scored 16 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Junior Bailey Golden added 15 points.
“They both played great,” Ana Llanusa said. “(Aliyah’s) stepped up a lot and developed into a real point guard for us, and that’s really big for us.”
Classen SAS got within seven in the final period until Ana Llanusa made her third 3 of the night. Even with the loss, Classen SAS coach Malcolm Roberts said for his team this was a positive step ahead of the playoffs.
“Our main goal was to see if we are the real deal as far as competing for a 4A state championship, and I believe that we are,” Roberts said.
