Coach O resigns

Totally different situation. Bomar's deal was setup by a donor/booster, not an assistant coach. Had an assistant coach been involved, Stoops would have canned him too (IMO).

This is a situation where the assistant coach is either doing something he was told to do, which is Jeff's fault, or he is doing something on his own which is also Jeff's fault because he should know what his coaches are doing (IMO).

Merv Johnson was sending guys to BRI for work; not the same as an "assistant coach" but certainly a part of OU's athletic program. Not going to defend either Coach O or Jeff in this situation, because for now all I have seen is that a guy resigned...I'll let the facts come out before I ask for any head's to roll.

i gotta think the only thing saving capel's job right now is cam.

That's where I am.

So, Merv was sending them to work or was he sending them to setup a deal where they didn't have to work (a la Bomar)?

Bomar and Quinn were caught because the money they reported earning to the university didn't match what they earned. So, if Merv were sending players to BRI for a situation like Bomar's then why weren't other players caught before Bomar? They weren't because it wasn't happening...at least not under Stoops. Maybe back in Barry's day or Gibbs (doubt it), but not Stoops.

Hard to say that there isn't any smoke with this, but firing Jeff and maybe Joe over a guy resigning seems a bit premature.
Yep, I'm definitely concerned right now but this might not be as bad as some are thinking.

Nobody knows whether Coach O was involved in the Tiny thing or not. I was just pointing out that an employee of the OU athletic department was sending guys to BRI, so the Bomar/Quinn deal happened under somebody's watch.

Your facts are wrong, but don't let that get in the way of a bad comparison.

Things are not getting bad. They have been bad and we are just now finding out about it. There is no reason to think that Capel knew what Coach O was doing with recruits. If he did, Joe C will find out and that will be that.

When you start cleaning out a dirty house it often looks much worse before it starts looking better. But in spite of appearances, progress is being made.

Isn't it ironic that OU goes through the problems with Sampson and then to be plagued with problems from players and an assistant now. But Calipari has been at two programs where wins had to be vacated because of infractions but because he had others do his dirty work his is still the lion of college basketball. The stuff that happened at UMass and Memphis are much worse than even this stuff we have now but Calipari does not even smell like smoke. But many people on this board are eager to blame Capel.

Calipari and Memphis/UMass are the least of our problems and talking about that doesn't do any good. I'm not even really sure what he did at UMass and Memphis. Most of the world hasn't even paid attention. It's time to get OU fixed.

I don't like the John Blake comparisons just because Coach Capel has always displayed a level of self-awareness that John Blake didn't have. You would never have seen Blake offer the kind of self-flagellating statement that Capel gave at the end of the season; he would lash out at others and blame the players for not executing the coach's plans.

I guess that is just picking nits, though, because as for the crux of the points made in those comparisons -- that Capel has let the program spiral out of control -- well, it's kind of hard to argue at this point. Just unbelievable that we are in this position now.

Wow. I remember getting killed on this board for saying that every program in the country has dirt on it. Everyone is bending the rules and every once in a awhile you get the guy who goes across the line and breaks them.

I'm a huge Capel fan, but if it comes down to him having the slightest inkling of Coach O giving Tiny money, or setting it up, or even turning a blind eye to anything (jumping to conclusions, I know), he should be gone.

And I think BCG would be the only "legit" coach that is desperate enough for a higher profile job (if you can call it that now...ugh).
