Coach O resigns

I think the only thing saving Capel's job right now is that he might have not known about it. If Joe Castiglione had information Capel knew about this, I think it would've been Capel also resigning today. Then again, the case could be made that it doesn't matter if he knew about it or not. Honestly, I think it's getting to that point.
I think it may be a little worse if he didn't know about it. Neither is that good.

LOL @ Joe C. getting fired. He is untouchable because of the Stoops hire.
The statement is coming from Spaceman. Given that, your second sentence is void to him because he actually thinks it's time for Stoops to go as well.

I am actually not a major Joe C fan but I don't think this necessarily should be a third strike against him. Not even a second one for that matter.

He runs the department in the black while supporting 21 programs and having success up and down the board. THAT is what makes him untouchable.

Joe C. is going nowhere. Assuming he's running things on the up-and-up, I don't want it to be 1996 all over again.

Compared to what we had Inthe administration department before he arrived Joe C. is like another J.C.

It's very,VERY easy for an assistant coach to engage in activities unknown to the head coach. A little discretion, keeping his mouth shut and who knows what anybody is doing? If Capel knew nothing I have no problem with him. Fire Stoops because of Bomar? A zero tolerance program? That's for those who cant manage on their own and dont want the responsibnility for trying.

I have looked and can not find Stitler's article, can someone get me pointed in the right direction, thanks in advance.

gotta agree with j2 - assistants can easily do things and the HC not know. But IMO when it comes to recruiting JC needs to know everything.

If Capel knew...can him. Crazy to think that if this is happening at a school like OU, what is going on at other programs around the country.

College basketball is broken.

This is a good move. Coach O hasn't been an assistant on many winning teams. We need someone who can do more than recruit...need somebody who can help coach and frankly, during the games, O looked clueless.
Amen brutha! I wondered how Capel was going to revamp his staff to improve productivity and I've felt all along that "Coach O" was an incredibly weak link in terms of actual coaching input.

That being said, I hope there's not "more to the story"

Coach O resigns without an announcement he has been hired by someone else, seems like he's been fired. With all the crap going on, it just seems logical that he's knee deep in it. If there is a positive, I too think he brought little to the coaching. He was hired for recruiting, unfortunately this might be an indicator of how he was getting it done. If Jeff survives, it at least gives him a chance to hire a quality assistant.

this ship is going down and going down pretty fast
Capel is in over his head and this thing has gotten away from him. Nice guy, but the John Blake comparisons are looking more and more legit.

Joe C. needs to cut his losses and bring in a legit coach and not try to go bargain basement this time. This program has to have a legit head coach that knows how to build a program.

I think we all know the answer to that question.

What a shame that some college coaches feel they have to cheat to compete. Makes me sick to think about it!

Totally different situation. Bomar's deal was setup by a donor/booster, not an assistant coach. Had an assistant coach been involved, Stoops would have canned him too (IMO).

This is a situation where the assistant coach is either doing something he was told to do, which is Jeff's fault, or he is doing something on his own which is also Jeff's fault because he should know what his coaches are doing (IMO).

if a coach was involved in this mess we have serious problems. inexcusable.

Agreed. The only problem now is getting a legit coach to come into this mess this late in the recruiting game, a depleted roster returning, and a possible NCAA investigation waiting in the wings.

Oh boy, not what I wanted to read when I came here.

May be time to ressurect the emo thread.

NORMAN — Oklahoma has announced the resignation of assistant basketball coach Oronde Taliaferro.
“I have another offer in a different realm that I’m going to be doing,” Taliaferro said when reached by the World Thursday afternoon. “I decided to move on.”

Taliaferro did not say what he would be doing, and he declined comment on OU’s ongoing investigation into the basketball program, stemming from a report that freshman player Tiny Gallon had $3,000 transferred into a bank account held by Gallon and his mother last August.

“My experience with this university has been great,” Taliaferro said. “Everybody has been wonderful to me and my family. I enjoyed my time with all the guys. We shared some incredible success. Last year was a rough year, but I wish everyone well, especially Coach (Jeff) Capel. He is a true friend and someone I really enjoyed working with.”

Capel brought in Taliaferro in May of 2007 to replace then-assistant Rod Barnes, and Taliaferro helped bring in McDonald’s All-Americans Willie Warren and Tiny Gallon. He was the highest-paid OU assistant, receiving a $12,000 salary bump to $186,000 following the 2008-09 season that saw the Sooners win 30 games and reach the Elite Eight.

As to the investigation, OU athletic director Joe Castiglione told the World Wednesday: “Right now, we’re just trying to discover as much information as there is out there, or come to the conclusion that there isn’t any information if that were the case.”

That there are no quotes from Capel or anyone in the athletic department wishing Coach O well is pretty telling. Not good.
