Question:

When a player has a few great games but in other games is inconsistant and at times looks timid Who takes the most heat for this the player or the coach? I know a coach has to put the players in the right position to succeed but a player still has to make the shots.

I am coming at this question from only playing Y basketball and church league so not much of my own experience. And I do not want my questions to become a bashing of specific players or coaches, I was just curious what some people think.

You cannot answer that question without more details, b/c it differs from situation to situation. Sometimes it's on the player, sometimes it's on the coach.

I will say this though.....when I see several fairly well thought of players, underachieve from year to year, I become more inclined to put that on the coach. If it's one player, who knows. Several players, I tend to look at the coach.

In my collegiate career i was one of these players...i would go off for 20+ in any given night, but also would have some duds scoring below 10...

In my Opinion it is the player, not the coach...Nothing changed in those games where i scored less, i either forced a lot of things or played passive...

Some players are just like this and as much as a coach wants them to be consistent it is very difficult for them to help them do so...

I'm not saying the coach cant do anything, or shouldnt have any responsibility in this production...i am just saying i think it is more on the player and their game, what they are comfortable with and what the matchup is...

Sometimes it has to do with the age & experience of the player. He has to learn which shots to take and which ones to pass up. The coach has to help him learn that.

It's not cool to criticize players, so we go after the coach.

Where did you play ball at

Really...it's both.

I agree, but in my case i know it wasnt the coach the majority of the time...

There were times i didnt feel i was put in the position to do as well (playing time/strategy/etc.) but mostly if i didnt play well it was because of me...

I am a guy that is all about being accountable for your actions...and it has always been hard for me to blame a coach...i usually lean on that side with others as well, and as players we are ultimately responsible for everything that happens on that court, because we are the only ones that can control it by playing...

I agree.

As a player, I was responsible for which shots I took or how bad of defense I played (etc.)...but if I jacked up 3-4 bad shots and the coach doesn't sit me or at least get in my ear, then it's probably the coach's fault. I'd still hold blame on myself too. I was always the guy that missed a three and said, "my bad" even if it was a good look. There's a lot of scenarios that could be either person's fault. If a player came into a program taking horrible, off-balanced shots and leaves doing the same, I'd blame the coach.

Coaches are accountable for wins and losses. It doesn't matter what caused those wins or losses. The coach gets the glory or the blame either way. He gets paid lots of money for this burden.

In my situation I was good enough to hurt you if you didn't focus on stopping me, but not good enough to consistently beat you when you did focus on me, which made me inconsistent. My inconsistencty was a byproduct of my skill set. I feel that this is where Cam is at right now.

Great Example...
