Coaches Poll released

New Some notables are
2. Kansas
10. Wisconsin
18. West Virginia
22. Texas

RV: Iowa state, Florida, Kansas state, Wichita state,

I don't completely disagree but am not too surprised. When you lose what OU did scoring wise and top that off with also losing your 2nd best go-to option in crunch time people don't know what to expect. OU seems to be just fine with the young talent they have, you just don't know how that young talent will react when games are on the line. Which can ultimately cost you 3-4 games if not more that can make or break your season record wise.

Not surprising. We probably got some carryover love from last year's team from coaches who don't realize how much we lost outside of Buddy.

As is, we lost 3 top 25 players in the history of the program, who had combined to start like 120+ games together. It's going to be a tough transition, and I think a lot of fans aren't really prepared for how tough it could be.

I don't disagree with you, but once again, I'm left scratching my head at the love texas gets. They lost several key players, too, and yet there they are in the top 25.

I wonder sometimes if Lon's not taken a bit for granted by those in the media and even by his peers.

OU's position in this pre-season poll was, to me, neither surprising nor expected. One should certainly understand that no one outside of a few fans will expect the Sooners to be as formidable, especially early in the season, as last year's final four team. But I also think some pollsters are basing their prediction entirely on the loss of Buddy, Isaiah and Ryan (which is, of course, huge).

But it's not exactly like we're devoid of experience. We've got at least six guys on our roster who played a lot last season as freshmen or sophomores. Woodard is one of the best, most experienced guards in the conference, and we should expect to see improved versions of Lattin, James, Buford, Odomes and McNeace. AND, we've got some talented freshmen coming in, though no one knows how much of an impact any of them will make.

So, 31st is probably fair and doesn't surprise me in the least. But I would also not be surprised to see this team in the Top 15 in the country by the time the regular season ends. Hope so, anyway.

I agree with you on every point, though I do wonder if we'll perhaps rack up enough losses in non-conference play to prevent us from climbing terribly high in the polls as we improve later in the season. I can see where we might take it on the chin a few times early (I'm not saying we will, mind you -- I just think it's possible).

You're right of course; we very well could take our lumps early in the season. If that happens, then perhaps we'll rebound from those early losses soon enough to climb substantially in the polls (which, of course, could boost our seeding heading into the postseason).

Right now, it's all speculation anyway.

Not completely unexpected, but this poll means nothing anyway.

Personally I feel a bit slighted but it's not necessarily a bad thing. I think most programs coming off a FF would normally be higher with two returning starters and lots of talented young guys. Teams like Wisconsin always seem to get that carry over respect. I believe last year they were top 25 coming off there final four run with a very similar set up as OU I want to say they returned one or 2 starters at most?

To your point a lot of the voters probably thought OU was all Buddy Hield and little else. Losing Buddy is huge, but you'd think Lon Kruger's fellow coaching brethren would give him and his Oklahoma program a bit more respect. Oh well.

I feel it's my duty to once again remind you guys not to put too much stock into pre-season polls. That especially holds true for this poll, because the coaches can often be out to lunch when it comes to this task. For years Kelvin's poll was filled out by the director of basketball operations, Josh Prock, and if he put five minutes of thought into his ballot then he was having a very introspective day.

The AP voters who aren't marooned on an endless football beat might give their vote some attention, but most likely not. This is the 2016-2017 season, and I'd advise you not to worry too much about the polls until the calendar actually flips TO 2017.

I have to assume that Texas' preseason ranking is based primarily on their #5 ranking recruiting class which included Jarrett Allen the #17 player in the country and the #5 power forward plus 3 other 4* playersl. Two were top 30 kids and 4 ranked in the top 105 by 247 Sports. Whereas OU class was ranked #27 with only 2 4* kids and McGusty at #42 the highest ranked and only top 100 player. Also 247 does not factor Strong in a member of our class. OU's class is not ranked in the Scout top 25.

As always Texas has a big advantage when recruiting Texas high school talent.

Scout also has the incoming Texas class ranked as the #5 in the country with two 5* (both ranked nationally in the top 20) and two 4* players. With OU only McGusty was a 4* and ranked #35. No other OU recruit was even ranked.

Yep...all this. I will start caring more about the polls come mid-January....hopefully we will be hanging around the top 25 at that time.

Too early to know, but perhaps one of these days Texas will start to actually live up to some of the hype they receive – both nationally and from certain Sooner "fans" – by signing all those top national recruits.

actually we had 2 espn top 100 players mcgusty and Doolittle ... and the espn recruiting guys say Freeman would have been a top 60 guy and a 4 star if they rated foreign prospects .. so 3 top 70 players ..
