Told a neat story about a gift Joe C sent him when Kelvin took the Houston job. Also referred to Joe as one of his best friends. One of the silliest things I see on this board occasionally is when people say/imply that Kelvin was fired or forced out. It’s very cool that he is on such good terms with Joe C even though he left for another college job.

Puts us on probation and then skips. With friends like that, Joe C doesn't need enemies.

I'm half joking. I've long since forgiven Kelvin, but I was plenty miffed with him back in the day (after years of defending him against the slings and arrows of large faction of our fan base) -- not because of the probation but he didn't stay to clean up his mess. That screwed over Joe C, the assistants, the players and the fans.

I was initially upset when he left because he got us into trouble and then left for Indiana. However, I can understand why he would leave when he was punished for text messages and turned in by other coaches who were cheating and had a history of paying players and extra benefits (Sutton, Roy Williams).

I’ve long since forgiven him and his crimes were completely minor compared to the felony neglect of our admin against the basketball program.

What Kelvin Sampson did in 2006 wouldn’t even register on the NCAA’s radar in 2021. I don’t think he was trying to bail on his mess a la Pete Carroll and USC. At that time, many regarded Indiana to be one of the best jobs in college basketball. He couldn’t say no.

Yep. I'm in complete agreement here. I never held a grudge. I always thought he made the move he had to make.

Now, the Indiana fans around me, whoa, they hate them some Kelvin!

Joe C's move was classy - just like Lon Kruger. I just don't see Joe C going away from that formula - class, above-board guy first, basketball coach second. I appreciate that approach. If we are trying to guess the next coach, maybe we should look at character first, then performance. This would chop off about half the list floating around.

Love how the new Thunder coach speaks - Daignault, sounds like a mini Sam Presti. Wonder if Joe C could find a mini Joe C with this hire. I think an assistant coach might be the way to go. Or maybe an older established coach with Lincoln Riley-type assistant to take over in five years.

Clearly Kelvin has talked with Joe in the last few days, maybe just a congratulations, maybe recommendations. No, Kelvin's not our next coach.

Kelvin was busted at OU because he was cheap. He wouldn’t buy the burner phones that other coaches used to send illegal texts. He chose to use the university issued phone.
He was just stupid to have the same offense at Indiana which resulted in his show cause ban. How can you do the exact thing you had been punished for at his previous job. Wait he wasn’t punished because he jumped ship.

I guess Waymon and Blake and Trey all "jumped ship" as well.

Apples and bobbleheads. They weren't head coaches whose own actions had just put a program on probation. You make a mess, you clean it up.

1. The probation OU received was a slap on the wrist. Literally no impact on the product we put on the floor in upcoming years.

2. Had Kelvin stayed at OU, THEN you'd have seen some actual penalties assessed that mattered. That is why he left. The OU Admin thought they'd get off lighter if Kelvin wasn't there. And they were right.

That was definitely the inside scoop at the time. Word back then was that Joe C wanted Kelvin to stay but Boren wanted him gone for exactly the reasons you outlined. The rest is history.

WT and Ada are both correct. The order came down from upon high, although the Indiana job certainly had a hell of a lot more luster in 2006 than it does now. That was still a premier post then.

At the time, and it's probably still true today, Kelvin could not believe he was going to get busted over phone troubles. When you compare that to the money flowing around it was absurd. Some of the stuff KU gets away with is downright criminal. And that's saying nothing of the massive academic fraud uncovered, and ignored, at North Carolina.

We probably lose both Griffin brothers if Kelvin stays, but I would've enjoyed watching Scottie Reynolds and Damion James. I would've enjoyed that very much. The next three years were set up REAL nice.
