Couple coach sightings and notes from Hutchinson kansas juco tournament

The NJCAA national tournament is basically a showcase, play well there and you will get numerous offers from school who were not recruiting you before.

You're right, we should only recruit players that other schools want. Like TMG, Gallon, Willis,......

I don't think many wanted Willis...FYI. I'd guess you meant WW...

If your going to be a smart-alec, at least get the names right.:)

A lot of high major schools are just now starting to look at juco players, and a lot of them get offers after this juco tournament in Hutchinson.

Thanks for the info.

Seems like this isn't the case for all JUCO's though, right? Or did Sampson usually find his juco players at this tourney? I can remember hearing a lot about Angelo Hamilton and his teammate (@ Connors; can't remember his name right now) who was going to change our program (but he didn't make his grades) before they enrolled at OU.

This is just one example...I'm sure I could come up with a few more.

One more question...does every JUCO team play in this tournament? If not, surely some of the teams who didn't play in the tournament have a player who is D1 material? How are they found?

Only the region champs make it to Hutch...there are numerous other players (not as many as in the past) who have the skills to play Division I. Unless they have some hype coming into the season, most won't sign in the fall. During the season, most conferences have jamborees and/or tournaments which highlight the conference talent overall (in Kansas it's called the Jayhawk Shootout). Plus, a lot of the coaches are looking for "fillers" right now, guys who are execeptional in one area: defense, rebounding, shooting, back up PG, etc. Players under this description are not often needed until after the season due to a team's weakness and/or player defections.

Lost of talented JUCO guys are placed at their respective JC or were recruited before they arrived.

He said Sam Houston State and Murray State are his two offers to go along with Southwestern Oklahoma State, which is close to Stringtown.

Southwestern is at Weatherford, OK which is in the western part of the State.
Southeastern is at Durant and is about 40 miles from Stringtown.

Willis committed early and had interest from schools in his area namely GTech and UGa, also had some interest shown my Maryland.

You do realize that Oregon and Temple are pretty solid offers to get, right?

If John Chaney were still at Temple then yes that would be a solid offer, however, he wasn't and Temple has been a marginal program since he retired (or was fired; however you want to look at it).

Oregon is a decent program, but not on the level of Oklahoma, Maryland, or Ga Tech as he mentioned. They just fired their coach so he wasn't winning many games...maybe that was because of his recruiting. ;)

I don't care how you candy coat it...Penn State and Central Florida are not top 64 programs.

I like what I've seen so far from Washington.

He's got four points and seven boards through the first 10 minutes. He's getting doubled and sometimes tripled when he touches it inside, which has been tough. Plays good position defense inside and contests lots of shots, then recovers to get the board. So far, so good.

This guard Mark Rutledge for Connors is also pretty impressive. Slashing, athletic 6-4 guard from Tulsa. Averages 14 a game for Connors and has 12 in the first half so far.

On Mark I've heard he is interested in Coppin State.

I'm not candy coating anything, and I didn't mention Penn St or UCF. Temple is back in the tourney this year and Oregon will be also as soon as they hire a head coach that knows what he's doing. In fact, Oregon is poised to make a HUGE jump with a multi-million dollar new facility opening. But whatever. The main point is that it's not like Willis's other offers were Bacone and Sam Sausage State. Although after having watched him play they should have been.

Temple did advance to the tourney but so did Arkansas Pine Bluff and Wofford. I'll be curious if Temple ever gets back to what it was under Chaney. That defense they played was a nightmare.

Oregon's about to hire Turgeon once aTm is done, so I'll refrain from spouting off about how good they might become. He's done a better than I expected job at aTm, but he's certainly not Bill Self, Pitino, or Calipari.

As for Willis's offers, I agree they weren't on the level of Bacone or Sam Sausage State (I like that one) but czech was trying to tell me Maryland and Ga Tech were hot after Willis and that simply isn't the case. I think you would agree that none of the programs Willis turned down to come to OU are on the same level as either Maryland or Ga Tech.

So 23, you think Washington is OU caliber?

My thoughts after only seeing him in that one game is that he's a much better overall player than Fitzgerald.

He doesn't have the offensive arsenal Fitz has, but he's a good garbage guy with a nice jumper and a good back down and jump hook move. Threw down some two-handed slams whenever he had the chance. Plus his defense and rebounding is night and day better than Fitzgerald. He really has a knack for rebounding, especially on the offensive end.

So I personally would take him and could see him starting alongside Tiny. Then if we were to get N'diaye, I think Washington would be a very, very good big to bring off the bench for 15-20 minutes. And as you know he's Oklahoma kid and I thought he played hard. I'm also intrigued by Orlando Brown as a backup type if we're really cleaning house.

Then again, I was also salivating over Mark Rutledge and thinking he's a Tulsa type player and soonersam says he's going to Coppin State. :D

Marquise Carter and Three Rivers are into the semifinals. Carter had 26. Also saw a highlight where he hit a three, so he does shoot more than just layups and free throws.

Pressey and Navarro coming on next.
