what can we do to fix it?

i think we need to not tie it to football season tix bc then nobody goes to basketball but still gets good football tix. if their ticket isnt used then they should get their football seats denoted

i think tix should be no more than 3-5 dollars. not many people want to pay 20 bucks to watch us...just saying

Nobody's going to go to basketball games until we start winning consistently again. Attendance wasn't a problem for the big games during the Elite Eight run a couple years ago.

Yep the crowd wasn't good last year because we stunk. Actually early last year we had some good crowds till people realized there was no basketball team.

Plus I think a lot of people would go if closer. I live about 6 1/2 hours away. Just not reality for me to travel for games. I might make a couple a year.

same here...also with distance i think norman doesnt have as many people that arent students. i thnk thats one reason the thunder get better attendance> idk bc i dont life in norman but thats my pov

The crowd was great for most of the game during Blake Griffin's last year here. Unless we fall apart in Big 12 play, I expect it will get better the rest of this season and continue to improve the next 2 seasons as the team improves.

I expected it to be at an all-time low these first few games as the fallout of last season.

Plus it was against Coppin State... nobody has good attendance for Coppin State, especially not with the other factors mentioned in this thread already.

Even early on in Blake's sophomore year before the mass public of Sooner fans figured out Blake was the best player since Tisdale the attedence was still small for the Coppin State's of the world.

I think the best case for in games like this is 6-7 or so. Which is sadly is about where we were at last year before things fell apart.

Everyone has attendance issues until they string together several successful years in a row. Unless you're in a major city or close to one (kansas is 30 minutes from a few million people in KC), you're going to deal with this, especially against the weaker teams on your schedule.

OSU maybe had 4000 at the GIA for a Saturday afternoon game with no home football game.

Texas has averaged just over 5000 (butts in seats) with their football team playing horribly.

ISU looked to have around 6K in their first game.

Baylor sold 7242 (actually more than they usually do at this point in the year) and looked to have over 5K.

Colorado sold just over 6K and looked to have around 4-4.5K.

A&M had 7K in their opener.

KSU (#3) doesn't report butts in the seats attendance, but their arena looked pretty full for their opener.

We go over this every year. There is only one team in the Big 12 that packs it out in November and December...Kansas. That's it. Every other team has less than half full arenas during MOST seasons. I don't like it. But "that's just the way it is...."

what you are asking for is that OU become a basketball school.... sorry.... ain't gonna happen....

Don't think "tie" is the right word. All of the priority points get rolled up into the same account for the donor, but each sport has its own giving levels. Donations to each sport are counted different.

Attendance at college events is down nationwide, don't expect a team fighting for a winning record and playing an opening game vs. Coppin State to be any better.

The best way to sell tix is to win it's really that simple. As others have posted outside of Kansas everyone is having attendance.

I remember when Florida was in the midst of back to back titles, they still couldn't sell out their early non-conference games. Winning helps, but "football" schools will always struggle to sell out games during football season.

Yes, Oklahoma basketball will always face an uphill battle regarding non-conference attendence. This is true.

It's hardly a reason to give up, though. Maybe I have just flat out missed it, but it seems to me the marketing for this year's basketball team has been non-existant.

You have missed it. There have been three different tv commercials as well as billboards all over OKC and norman. I've personally been pretty impressed with the marketing department this year. they also have been very helpful with The Capelables with student section matters.

what more do you want?

Something more than that. Watch the crowds this year. Billboards and tv commercials aren't going to do a thing. I know that, because it's the same thing they've done for years, and it hasn't worked. I don't buy the defeatist "basketball attendance will always suck" attitude.

I would like to see something that leads me to believe they are interested in doing something different/moderately creative to stir up interest in Oklahoma basketball.

I don't have a Facebook page. Can someone tell me if this is the extent of the athletic department's presence on there? This doesn't cut it.

Honestly, that they won't even put an RSS feed on the official Men's Basketball team blog says volumes about how interested they are in getting information about the team out there to the public at large.
