I know for me, the problem is distance.
In '08/'09 I was a student, and only missed the Maryland-Eastern Shore-type games over Christmas and the Davidson game because of class.
Last year, my girlfriend was a student, so I would come up and stay the weekend with her, so I was able to attend many of the Friday or Saturday games.
This year, it's just way too difficult to get to more than a couple games.
For football, you get 6 games a year, so by default, every game is a big game. There's a whole gameday experience, and you're at the game for 4 hours. So I can justify the 3 hours each way.
For basketball, the arena is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, there's not really much gameday experience to speak of, and you're only at the game for 2 hours. I can make it up for some big games on the weekends, but having a job in Dallas puts me out by default for any game during the week.
I can understand why there are more complex factors other than having just a winning team to get big crowds on a consistent basis.
Having such a large portion of alumni living 3+ hours a way hurts it.
