First of all, she put nearly 2,000 people in jail for marijuana violations. And then admitted she smoked weed, and literally laughed about it. Not about putting those people in jail, but about the fact that she has smoked weed.
Let's be clear on the audacity of that... You put someone in jail, you have either ruined their life, or severely damaged it. They have a record, can't get a good job, have their freedoms taken away, etc. Going to jail is a very big deal.
She also sent out 600,000 letters to parents threatening to put them in jail if their children miss too much school without an excuse.
She's defended the death penalty, now says she's against it.
She has, on record, fought to keep people in jail longer than their sentenced terms.
She continued to prosecute the 3 strikes crime rule which puts people away for life, although she did modify it to only include serious crimes.
There are more, but I will mention one more.... She tried to keep more people in prison, even after the Supreme Court ordered her to let 33,000 prisoners at because the state of California prisons were so bad, so overcrowded, that it was ruled unconstitutional due to overcrowding, starvation, etc. Even worse, her office argued it would deplete prison labor resources. She later denied she supported that, but it did come out of her office.
She has announced some reforms, but her actions don't look good to me at all. Especially in the day and age we are in. It's going to be hard for her to speak to certain things when she was so tough on crime, a contributor to mass incarceration, etc.
