He looks to have a solid offensive game. The recent practice reports have not discussed him. Will he get some PT? Does he play good defense?
That was D Walker's weakness last year, he could not pressure the ball or stop penetration to the middle.

Will D Strong contribute more than Walker ?
Thanks

Goodness gracious I hope so.

In 30+ years of rooting for the Sooners, I've perhaps never been as disappointed with a player as I was with Walker.

Disappointed because he wasn't as talented as you believed coming in or because you didn't believe he maximized his opportunity with the talent he did have? Just curious. I thought Walker was an above average guard playing on a team with some excellent guards ahead of him. He certainty had some nice moments offensively and always seemed to play hard

Why? He performed his role very well as a scorer off the bench since Booker left. He was an average rated juco guy, did you have high expectations?

i didn't have high expectations but it was frustrating watching a guy that could look amazing for one game and then dissappear the next game.

D Walker was a last resort type of recruit that might improve and contribute to the team.. What kind of game does D Strong have?

Well he was strictly a scorer. If he was able to get into the lane and hit a 3 or two then he looked awesome, but he didn't have a lot of time to show an impact with the 3 guards last year and James coming on towards the end. I was extremely happy with what Walker brought to the program coming in with low expectations for him.

I agree. He hit some 3s against UT one time in Norman when everyone else was clanging. So he did have some snippets of contributions.

You're talking about Chris Walker, right?

I think he is talking about Dinijyl Walker, who was not too bad as a role player in spots last season. Guess he forgot about guys like Chris Walker, Nick Thompson and Casey Arent.

Somehow this was a Darrion Strong thread that got hijacked into a Dinjyl answer. Walker is history. I'm also curious how Strong is looking. I know one practice report mentioned him hitting a couple of 3's. Another talked about him kicking out a pass to McGusty who hit a 3. Still another mentioned that the Sooners haven't worked on a press or press break, so it's difficult to evaluate the PG play.

I think CoachTalk was trying to answer the original question when he said Strong would play more than most people expect. I agree with that. I think he will ultimately be in the 8-9 man rotation. JMHO.

Comments from those who have seen him practice?

Strong is a much better scorer than Woodard. I bet strong averages 15+ minutes maybe more on the season as long as his defense is on par with Woodard. Just my two cents after watching a half dozen Cville games in person last year.

That's good to know, bricklayer! Judging by the videos I have seen, Strong's strength appears to be driving and finishing at the rim. Is that a correct assessment?

Can he score from the perimeter? How good is his defense? Do you think he is capable of backing up Woodard at the point, or is he mainly a combo guard who can score?

Strong shot 47% from the field as a freshman, and that included 42% from 3-point range on 108-257 shots. Not bad.

He was the conference POY as a freshman and got more attention his sophomore year ...... when he had that shoulder injury. He shot 44% from the field but only 32.4% from the arc where he was 60-185. Not good.

I do think he's a pure PG and not a combo, but he will allow Woodard to slide over to the wing at times.

You have to take his Cville numbers with a grain of salt, there was way too much selfish play, I mean seriously terrible including really bad shot selection. Team assists were at the bottom of th JUCO rankings as I recall. As long as Strong follows orders, he should do just fine. He obviuously drives well to the bucket, but also adept at pull up midrange jumpers, along with 3's. Defense will be a concern against taller athletic players, as goes for any 6ft guard.
