Make it five straight.
No. 4-ranked Deer Creek is again back in the state tournament, and this time it did it in perhaps its most convincing fashion.
The Antlers dominated No. 2 Choctaw in a 62-50 victory Thursday night to win a Class 6A area championship at Moore High School.
“I don’t really think that many people thought we would do it like this again this year,” Deer Creek junior guard Sydney Manning said. “It’s crazy, we’re so happy and this is just so amazing.”
Deer Creek is in just its second season of Class 6A basketball. It made the tournament last year, but lost the first round. It had won three straight Class 5A titles before that.
And this may be one of the Antlers’ most well-rounded teams.
They got 22 points from Manning — who shot 6 of 7 from the floor — 16 from Lauren Fields and 12 from Maddie Rehl. Behind the trio, they jumped to an early 15-4 lead and never looked back.
More importantly, Deer Creek’s defense shined.
It hounded Oklahoma signee Ana Llanusa, who finished with 22 points after shooting a dismal 1 of 8 in the first half. And it held junior Bailey Golden to just nine points.
“Our defense is so good,” Manning said. “I mean, we’re guarding Ana and Bailey. They have all of these amazing players at Choctaw and for us to hold them to 50 was a big deal for us.”
