Defense won this game

Odomes needs to do more offensively even if it is just hang around the bucket and score on broken plays. His offensive game is a huge struggle.

Defense will win some games........but we need some scorers.

CJ and Manek need help getting good looks. They are both spot up shooters.
We haven't got many players on this team that can score one on one.

Muni has improved.....he can get his own shot. But he needs to work harder at getting his shot, not what they want to let him have. Against most of the teams this year, he should be dictating what goes on in the lane.

I haven't seen enough of the others to know.......

It's so weird to recall that Odomes was the high scorer in that all-star game right before he arrived in Norman.

And he was fantastic in that game in Hawaii when we blew out Villanova as a freshman. Had a ton of points, then didn't play for about 6 weeks.

Odomes scored 37 points in the Faith Seven game, where he was 2 of 4 from three point range and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Go figure! :facepalm

Being a more physical kid in high school that can get to the rim and over-power adolescent young men can be fools gold. Faith 7 game is like all other all-star games--zero defense. Players today are simply recruited on physical measurables--with the hope that you can improve skill set. That happens with some, others never can adapt.

When a kid stays 4 years--it often is not due to lack of effort.

I recall hearing that early in his freshman season, the coaches realized that RO's shooting form was, for lack of a better word, broken, and that it needed to be drastically changed for him to succeed at the college level. I think that is when his playing time dried up, and I think they may have even wished they had redshirted him. Obviously the changes they made haven't really improved his shot, but I definitely don't think it is from a lack of effort. And despite his offensive limitations, I love RO -- he plays very hard and does a lot of stuff to help win games. And I know the coaches and players respect how well he has handled the move to the bench after starting last season. Not everyone would be unselfish enough to do that. I would love it if he had a reliable shot, but I choose to focus on all the good things about him rather than stress too much over the one glaring weakness. And I think he will be a big part of several wins this season -- he has a few games a year when he manages to get to the rim almost at will.

I choose to focus on all the good things about him rather than stress too much over the one glaring weakness. And I think he will be a big part of several wins this season -- he has a few games a year when he manages to get to the rim almost at will.

I'm with you, and I regret making a joke at his expense. I'm very glad he's a Sooner.

I was also at that Faith-7 game and I concur completely with your assessment. That Texas all-star team was loaded with high rated recruits, and that night Odomes looked like the best of the bunch.

And yes, their was effort and defense in that game as the Texas vs. Oklahoma state pride factor comes into play.

I never said that the event doesn't draw great players. Listen fellas, I have been a part of Faith 7 games for over 20 years...Defense as a whole is simply not a part of that game. Coaches get 2 practices with kids they don't know in an effort to put some cohesion together. Defense is always sacrificed in those events for offense. Heck, Trae Young is a prime example: Top flight player and athlete who never played a possession of defense. It doesn't mean there isn't talent, it simply means that those all-star games are not made to showcase what young men can or cannot do on defense. There is a vast amount of matador defense in every all-star game. There will be pockets of individual defensive effort (usually on-ball), but defensive rotations and team defense as a whole is crap--that leads to breakdowns and athletes getting opportunities to score that they never see in an actual game.

Heck--Ro is further proof of that statement! I am not knocking him...I think he is a hard-working kid. I'm pointing out why he was recruited. OU knew his deficiencies...the coaches simply thought they could coach it up.
