Devion Harmon to the Portal

He lost the coach and assistant that recruited him.

Agreed. If Devion truly believes he has what it takes to play in the NBA, then I think transferring and ending up at blue blood like Kansas is his best option. Play in bigger games, have a great tournament, and just go ball out for a year. Plus, if he ends up at KU, Self has a good track record of getting undersized guards in the NBA - Frank Mason and Devonte Graham.

Very interesting. It's pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if Brady getting interest from the likes of UNC contributed to Harmon entering his name? When he committed to OU, I think he made a statement about showing the "blue bloods" that passed on him what they missed out on. Maybe his experience here hasn't been what he thought it would be and he's trying to see if he can get a taste of that "blue blood" experience?

Well....Although Phipps wasn't going to be an All Big 12 player, in hindsight he would have plenty of opportunity to play next season.

I don't share the opinion of those who are bashing him any more than any other kid who enters the portal just because he is being linked with KU. But to suggest going to a blue blood somehow improves his chances at getting drafted because he would be playing in "bigger games" is silly. We play in the same league and play a similarly difficult noncon. I don't think scouts are unaware of the remote outpost of OU lol.

True enough, and generally a player who loses his coach gets to move on, usually without complaint or comment from fans -- disappointment, sure, and frustration, but generally not anger.

Harmon's path has been a bit more frustrating -- first he says he's going pro, when no one think that's a good move for him. And he makes this decision before he even knows who's replacing Coach Kruger. Then he drops hints that he's probably staying, enough so that even Coach Moser acknowledges that likelihood.

Now he's making moves toward staying in college but going elsewhere -- and is rumored to be going to a conference rival.

He's entitled to any and all of those actions, but fans are entitled to be frustrated, too. It's been a heckuva roller coaster with him the past couple of weeks, and an OU fan might rightly feel jerked around.

We’ve been over this ad nauseum. Oklahoma has had more guys make the NBA All-Star team in the last 5 years than Kansas. They have had the exact same number of different all-star players since Wilt Chamberlain retired nearly a half-century ago. Going to Kansas gives a player more exposure, the ability to play in front of a full-packed arena, and the increased advantage of playing in the Final Four. But I will say this for the 1000th time. Playing for Kansas does not give someone even a fraction of a 1% chance of having a better NBA career than playing for OU.

Since when is OU basketball good enough to tell a 5* Oklahoma kid "no", just b/c he chose KU over us initially?

That is silly.

i would love for him to come to OU .. .

the "no" was in response to "give the keys to Bryce"

How many of you would take a stand on moral grounds if Breece Hall from Iowa State decider to transfer to OU? Intraconference, transferring to a blue blood ... I’m guessing 95 percent of OU fans would be thrilled to see him lining up in our backfield on the first play of the season. If you hate transfers and think kids should sit out a year, that’s fine, but people should at least apply the same standards regardless of whether it is a transfer that helps or hurts OU, and regardless of whether you hate the other team involved, as appears to be the case with Harmon being linked to KU.

I get the example but ou doesn’t need hall. I also think football isn’t going to be impacted as badly in large part of the fact that there are over 22+ starters on a team versus only 5 in hoops. One guy like Harmon switching from ou to ku is much more significant than hall to ou would be. Thompson coming to osu or ou would be the same thing, and I generally don’t like the free infra conference transfer rule. I fear for college hoops future. This will shrink the fan base of most programs.

there would be a whole lot of "well that's different posts". Hell we are already seeing it with the discussion of Bryce Thompson transferring here.

I have no issue on a micro (player level) whatever the rule is teams and players should make the best choice for themselves ... and i hope all transfers work out great for OU ..

but on a Macro level I believe that it is bad for the sport and i really really dislike it ..

Me too. But how does a new coach fill his roster if he takes a job with a tiny roster without any time to recruit? How have coaches done it in the past? I'm asking.

I'm already fed up with the transfer portal in whatever sport you want to name. I'm a fan. A fan of the Oklahoma Sooners. I root for the Sooners and whoever is playing for them. If a player chooses to go somewhere else, best of luck to them personally but I could care less how they perform somewhere else.

This whole thing smacks of pro sports and it began with free agency. It is now to the point that many fans don't follow teams anymore, but players. That will never be me. I used to enjoy knowing who was coming up in the Cincinnati Reds farm system because it was a window into what the next 5 to 10 years held for them. Now it's a "snapchat" that is here today and gone tomorrow, or at least in a year or 2 or 3. I like the joy of watching young players develop, mature and mesh with the veterans and role players and watching the TEAM come together and mature, whatever the sport.

As for Harmon, it seems from my mile high view he is making a big mistake. I loved watching his family in the stands and celebrating wins with them. He seemed to love Boomer Sooner as a recruit, but now it seems he can't wait to find a way out. I think he may long for these days at some point, but maybe that's my Sooner glasses talking.

At this point, enter the draft, enter the portal, whatever, best of luck to you.

I hate the portal in all sports, whether it's players leaving here or coming here.

it's not just about a rival, it's that he declared immediately. then started to give false hope that he miiiiiiight be back, but either way he would take as much time as possible to figure it out. then he just up and enters the portal? nah. major red flag. he just had us as a backup plan in case the draft didn't work out. mich state, unc, kentucky? ok, cool. it's a better move than staying in the draft. but if it is kansas after this little circus? hell nah. it's a weasel move.

culture. glad we can move on.

So am I the only person here that likes the portal?
