Did Cole sign a LOI?

Kruger's announcement a few days ago did not say that Cole has signed a LOI. The article said that Henry and Cole "will join" OU's class for the 2012-13 season, but there is nothing about either player actually signing a LOI.

The quoted portion of that article from Soonersports.com below clearly states that Hield and Hornbeak (the "pair of top-100 national recruits" mentioned in the paragraph below) signed with the Sooners, but it doesn't really say that Henry or Cole signed anything.

Three weeks after announcing the signing of a pair of top-100 national recruits to letters of intent, Oklahoma head men's basketball coach Lon Kruger said Wednesday that two more highly regarded players -- Jarion Henry and C.J. Cole -- will join the Sooners for the 2012-13 season.

That doesn't mean those two guys did not sign last week. I'm simply pointing out that the announcement on Soonersports.com seemed to make a distinction between Hield and Hornbeak, who signed letters of intent, and Henry and Cole, who will "join" our 2012 recruiting class.

Hopefully, someone out there can clear the air on this matter.

Isn't it an NCAA violation to name recruits that haven't signed a LOI. Therfore I would assume they did sign LOIs.

You may be right, cuda. I think that's why everyone assumed Cole had signed a LOI. Well, that and the wording at first glance was a bit confusing.

That said, maybe the rule (assuming we're right about that, too) is different for a recruited walk on who will reportedly be on an academic scholarship. In other words, if Cole accepted a grant in aid from the university for his academic accomplishments, did that pave the way for Coach Kruger to talk about him?

I'm not sure of the answers. When I read the article again, I couldn't help but notice that I had glossed over the wording the first time around. Maybe someone can clear these questions up for us?

Henery didn't sign a letter on intent. Players only get one. He used his with New Mexico. I posted on another thread that Cole didn't sign one either. No ship, no letter of intent. They go together.

Could they have enrolled or signed financial papers or something? Maybe both are coming at semester in January?

Do you mean this post?:

I'm not an expert on NCAA rules. But, I do have Google.

If a player signs a LOI in expressly means they have a ship. It is that contract deal. Both parties get something of value. The school gets the player's services. The player gets financial aid.

If you posted that Cole did not sign a LOI, I must have missed it.

The only thing I have read so far seems to suggest that the majority of posters are confused about whether Cole will fill one of our ships next season. That's why I was hoping someone could confirm if that's true, and also answer questions about Kruger's announcement as it applies to NCAA rules? I've got to believe there was no violation. LK has been cautious about crossing that line throughout his career.

All I know is what I read. Kruger said Cole was to be a "Prefered Walkon" Walkon means no basketball ship. No ship means no Letter of intent. There are other types of aid available for Cole. I'm sure that they will make those arrangements for him. Henery and Cole at this point are nothing more than verbal commitments. Schools report verbal commits to the media all the time.

Whether Cole plays or redshirts next season, I would guess that he gets his ship the next season when one is available. This is just a dog and pony show to get the kid locked up when there wasn't a ship available. If Henery honors his verbale commitment. He will get his ship next season.

I have no way of knowing, but, if it were me. I would Keep Cole on the original deal and use Calvins ship for a good 2012 juco or wait and see if a good transfer pops up at the end of the season.

In short, you're going with what Kruger said earlier and have no first hand knowledge that anything has changed since then? That's the way I saw it, too, until a number of posters took the Soonersport.com article to mean that Cole had signed a LOI. That's not what the article said, which is why I started this thread.

I agree that keeping Cole on an academic scholarship is the best way to go next year. I mean, why use a valuable ship on a kid who qualifies for financial aid academically? I say use it on a big and let Cole fill one of the ships we'll have the following year.

Time for Bedlam! GO SOONERS!!!

With a 4.25 GPA, Cole may never need an athletic scholarship.

You can sign more than one Loi. out of hs out of prep out of juco you can sign a Loi. Coaches can NOT talk about walk ons before they are on campus. Cole will be get a ship next year
