Every game OU plays Capel becomes more of a joke..

Agreed. I think Capel wasn't ready to be a head coach at a major school yet, but he learned some valuable lessons in the process and going to an Elite 8 game is a pretty good achievement for a young coach. Nonetheless, Kruger has a lot more experience, particularly with getting a lot out of lesser talent. Kruger has made the team much more sound fundamentally particularly on the defensive end and rebounding, and they seem to be focused more on the team than themselves.

He was handed a team with some good pieces. But they didn't have much of a clue how to play team defense. He's also doing a very good job of camoflaging our weaknesses. We are a much more resilient team than we were last year.

Mostly Blake. As good as those surrounding guys were, Blake brought something to the court that you don't see everyday. Physically, there was just nobody that could match up with him. That isn't coaching. There is no reason to harp on it, but Capel got VERY lucky with Blake.

I think it's ironic jmizzy still feels the need to ridicule me or put me in a separate category of OU basketball fans just because I was right about Capel and about Kruger (as I was one of the main posters on this site campaigning for Lon to get the job). I haven mentioned Capel in close to a month yet I am almost forced to when called out by jmizzy.

Who would have thought that a bunch of freshman and sophomores would improve a lot going into the next season? Who would have thought that adding another athletic, skilled post and the best PG we've had since Quannas White (both of whom were recruited by Jeff Capel) would improve the team? Give me a freaking break.


All this talk bashing on Capel is just assinine. Yes, Lon Kruger is a better coach than Jeff Capel. However, Lon Kruger is better than like 97% of Division 1 head coaches, so that's not really saying much, other than Capel was not in the top 3% of head coaches and no one was ever saying that he was.


Capel was not a bad coach. The poor decision to bring in TMG and Tiny Gallon, two guys who had reputations as trouble makers, is what cost Jeff Capel his job. Doug Gottlieb was right, that after that abomination of a season, OU basketball had lost its shine. However, after those two came in and imploded the entire team, he did a damn fine job of rebuilding the roster. The team last year played really hard and competed with a roster almost completely made up of freshmen and sophomores. So yes, we are better off with Lon Kruger, but we'd still be in good shape if we had Capel.

You and Jerry both acted like complete jackalopes all last season and it was tiring and ridiculous for most of us on this board. You took it out on the players constantly despite the fact that the core of the team was trying the best that they could despite having mediocre coaching (see Blair, Pledger, Cam etc). I could care less if you were right - learn to act like an adult on here and get back to me. Dumping on 18 y/o college kids is pretty petty if you ask me.

Mizz NEVER starts these nonsense threads. You want to be able to respond to people who disagree with you but you don't want Mizz to do the same? Sounds rather hypocritical to me.

Capel brought the Duke system and that only works when you have the athletes to perform it. When Capel had Blake, we were battle tested and solid. Without an all-american, Capel struggled to adjust the system. That is no knock on him. We just couldn't get the right players with good character after Blake.

Is this supposed to be a defense of Capel? Because it sounds like you're saying that not only could he not recruit, but he couldn't coach either.

All I know is that fun and optimism are back at OU, and that's directly because we have a real coach now.

Respectfully disagree Big Time. I did bash Capel every chance I got and based on other things I've heard I was very right. I don't ever remember bashing a player last year though. If I did I apologize . But i will never take back what I said about Jeff Capel.

Lon Kruger is obviously a better coach than Jeff Capel, but Capel had a hand in getting our best players on this roster to come to OU. I just don't understand why we can't all just be happy with the current success we are having and move on from the past.

Like Ms Proud said, I never started any of the negative threads, and most of my responses were because of what Soonerman said, you few posters made the entire board miserable last yr with your self serving chest thumping posts/threads. You took EVERY OPPORTUNITY you could find to tell everyone how right you were about Capel.... Guess what, alot of posters were right about Capel and few felt or still feel the need to let us all know about it.

Doesn't matter to me if it is Capel, Tubbs, Bliss, Sampson, Kruger, etc... I will always support whoever coaches us, until the admin makes a change.

I'm now a LK fan, and I'm perfectly fine with moving on and supporting the team, just as I have all year. I will continue to respond whenever we get the worthless threads/posts simply made to attack one of OUr former coaches.....

At some point is the responsibility of the fans and alumni to call for a coaching change. John Blake and Jeff Capel clearly needed to go. In my years as a Sooner fan they were clearly the most incompetent coaches at OU's major programs. Gibbs and Captain Kangaroo also probably needed to go but they were at a different level then the first two clowns.

I really don't get why people defend Jeff Capel. We had NCAA issues under his leadership, we failed to reach the post season 60% of the time, he never one the conference or the conference championship, I think he lost more players than he graduated and most that graduated came from Sampson. The guy was a joke. He really set OU's basketball program back. Thankfully Joe C fired him and hired Kruger.
