Shawnee desperately needed a spark.
El Reno had closed a double-digit deficit to four points as Shawnee’s offense stalled. It was a move-in playing just her second game that would change things.
Lauren Fields, playing just her second game for the Wolves, electrified Shawnee in the final 4 minutes of a 45-29 win over El Reno at Shawnee High School.
Fields, a junior guard committed to California, had five steals and scored seven points in the final quarter, looking much like the star who once was a big part of Deer Creek.
“I knew we had to pick up the intensity,” Fields said. “I knew it would happen on the defensive end.”
Fields finished with 15 points and six steals off the bench. But don’t expect her to be on the bench too long. Shawnee coach Wendi Wells said it’s likely she’s in the starting lineup next week.
“She adds another dimension speed-wise,” Wells said. “She’s a great kid and she meshes well with our kids.”
Fields moved to Shawnee over Christmas break. Under OSSAA rules, she had to sit 15 days before being ruled eligible. That took an extra few days, but she was thrilled to take the court Tuesday.
On Friday, she felt more relaxed with her new teammates.
Before the game, they offered to detail more plays in the locker room. Then they differed to her in crunch time.
“It’s a huge change, but I like it a lot,” Fields said.
