He finished .500 in the Big 10 in year one. Loser hasn’t done that in five seasons and most years hasn’t come close. And Ben did that in a league that has 6 teams in the Sweet 16. And he did that with a bunch of guys who were D-2 players who no one else wanted. Some of that is logical but comparing OU to Utah St is not the same in regard to schedules. St. Louis pounded Georgia then two days later got pounded by Michigan. Thats the equivalent of playing Georgia then teo days later having Florida or Tenn or Alabama types in the same conference. Utah st only has to prepare and play the likes of Arizona one time. Maybe they had their best night and still came up short. There’s a reason why some of these guys are staying put and getting a little more NIL in those same situations and being able to repeat or get close to the same type of result, they had the year before. Hodgesens turned down Syracuse and everybody thought he would stay at South Florida just to turn around and bolt to Providence which a lot are saying is due to the promises he was made in NIL contributions. Yes good to great coaching is definitely needed on most nights, but you still have to have the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s as well and in todays world and money brings a lot more of those in.
In my opinion, when you look at the case at Iowa, McCollum had a solid year but finished middle of the pack in the big 10 and that’s with a lot of his guys that have been in his system especially his superstar for the last four years. You don’t get a lot of of that anymore unless you can pony up the dough you’re in and you’re out. Honestly, Florida gave that game away with multiple bad possessions in regard to coaching and or player blenders, and not too many people are going to be calling for Todd Golden’s head today.
A friend of mine who is in Iowa fan said behind the scenes, they are already discussing how to come up with more NIL for Iowa next year to replace some of the guys they know they are losing.
And for all the crap about UF blowing the game, don’t forget that Iowa led for the vast majority of the game. This was not a fluke win. No doubt Florida made a defensive mistake on the final Iowa possession, but they played very well, and very hard, for 40 minutes.
