Fire Porter Moser

If our bball program is really the sisters of the poor jv program rn then it makes sense why the JoeC would wait until the ill advised extension runs out. The new guy probably wants an offseason to fire him instead of landing and immediately yeeting Moser off the cliff.

I’d be surprised if it was him. He was a finalist for the Phoenix Suns job last cycle
It came down to Jordan Ott and Johnnie Bryant. He was a candidate but came down to them two.
He could go the college route to being a head coach.

I don’t know anything about him but the original Dave bliss did set us on the path to being a great program for a really long time. He laid a foundation that billy Tubbs turned into greatness And Kelvin Sampson also continued. Maybe it’s fate, history repeating. Or maybe we’re doomed!
Original Dave Bliss was good at OU but Tubbs had to start all over. Then there was that Baylor stuff which always made me very happy he didn’t stick around OU.

PM might have survived if he could have signed the younger Fears brother to also come to OU.

You are correct. Dave Bliss left almost nothing for Billy Tubbs to build around. He left him a solid senior (Ray Whitley), one young player to build around (Chucky Barnett), and another young player to help them compete (Bo Overton). With Whitley having to redshirt due to injury, the 1980-81 OU team was easily the least talented roster in the past 55-60 years. The reason Billy didn't have much was because Bliss stopped recruiting - he wanted to get the heck out of Norman. I think NMSooner80 can provide more details on the WHY part, but guessing it had a lot to do with the fan base and administration's perceived lack of commitment. The thing is, they did TRY to get John Thompson away from Georgetown, so that would indicate there was someone in the athletic department who wanted to win.

In mict085's defense, I think he was referring to the fact that Bliss did take OU to the highest level of any coach after Bruce Drake. The 1979 NCAA Tournament appearance was their first since 1947. Bliss certainly gets credit for perhaps Billy thinking he can win at OU...just like Kelvin said he took the OU job because Billy made it a good job.

Speaking of John Thompson, there was a classic line from Billy Tubbs a few of you may not have heard. When asked: "Does it bother you that you were not OU's first choice?" Billy's reply: "No. I wasn't my wife's first choice either."

Sorry, back on topic. Fire Moser! :)

Waymon is right. Bliss left because he hadn't signed anyone and everyone that played for him had graduated. Billy had to start over. Not sure why he left. We paid less than just about anybody for a basketball coach. I know that is why Billy left to go to TCU. They more than doubled his salary. Maybe Bliss left for that reason, I don't know.

Maybe you remember Waymon, but didn't billy just have 7 scholarship players eligible to play that first year. It was something like that. He had a couple transfers in that had to sit out, including David Little, but I think that is about it. I went to every home game Billy's first year and may did we have an empty gym in those days. Then, Billy turned it around and what a run. Thanks billy and Waymon Tisdale (my favorite athlete of all time).

I think one of those transfers was Charles "Big Time" Jones, a big man who was only big in stature but he was a loveable Sooner. Overslept on a road trip and I think missed either the team bus or the flight and was then know as "Bed Time" Jones!! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I remember when Billy got the job they asked about his offensive system and he said this year (his first) we are going to run a run and shoot offense but eventually we hope to run and score!! Hahaha, Billy was a treasure for sure.

I think you are right on Jones. If I remember correct, he lost a jillion pounds by his second year and actually gave us a little something. Man was he enormous the first time I saw him. David Little was terrific as a wing shooter Billy's second year. David never saw a shot he didn't like.

Billy was absolutely a treasure. My favorite OU coach (for too many reasons to type).

1. This is from memory. The guy who told me this story passed away two years ago. The Sooners were heading to Hawaii for the Diamondhead Classic (something like that. Same tournament we won Buddy's senior year) and had a layover at LAX. Big Time wanders off and then falls asleep somewhere in the terminal. OUr team loads onto the plane and departs without doing any kind of inventory. Big Time wakes up and is dismayed to learn the crew is somewhere over the Pacific. He ends up catching a ride with Dean Smith, Michael Jordan and the 82-83 Tarheels, who beat us in the semifinals. Jones is from Mexia, Texas, the same hometown as Anna Nicole Smith (RIP).

2. I remember the quote being something like "Our plan this season is to run and shoot. Teams better get their licks in now because next year we're going to run and SCORE!"

My old man has spoken many times of how awesome it was to watch weekly coaches' shows from both Barry Switzer and Billy Tubbs. Must See TV !!
