Betrayal is not something that should be taught or condoned. We, as fans and people, hate it worse than anything. We hate Riley not because of his record but because he betrayed our trust. He had agreed to a new deal "in principle" with USC in September of his last year and then left in the middle of the night after throwing our last two games all the while lying to everyone that he hadn't done these things. How hated is Lane Kiffin in Mississippi.
This team hasn't quit and is still trying to win. This coaching staff hasn't quit and is still trying to win games -- for themselves and us. I hope this administration doesn't betray the team by firing the coach. If you want to fire the coach after the season, then fine. But until them, the right thing to do is support them the best you can. That is their role in an educational system. Their role isn't to please a loud minority of people who don't want OU to stand for and do what is right due to a lack of patience.
As I have said before, I don't particularly like Porter as a coach. But, you aren't being fair to suggest he isn't a decent, if not "good", coach. Is he the best we can do? I doubt it, but who knows based on the necessity of our commitment level for basketball. Great, good, average, bad or horrible, we hired him and he is trying to do the best job he can this year. So, my opinion is you support him and the kids on the team and then when the year is over, make a decision about whether to go in a different direction. Quitters never win. How many of you have told your kids that. Coach to the buzzer, play to the buzzer, these are all things we hope sports teaches our kids and they carry that throughout their lives. Sermon over.
