I think a key match-up to watch will be Buddy vs Smart. I'm excited to see what he can do defensively and on the glass against fellow frosh from OSU.

Hornbeak will more than likely be guarding Smart. Kruger might throw Clark out there to guard him at time as well. What makes you think Buddy would be matched up with Smart and vice versa?

I think Smart Strength is probably a bad match-up for Hornbeak were as Buddy is about the same size as Smart.

I agree that Hield is a better match up for Smart. Hornbeak is a good defender, but he's not strong or athletic enough to hang with Smart. If Buddy can't keep him from having a career day, I think Cam will be called on early and often.

The goods news is that we have four back court players with size who are also really good on defense.

Ada, what do you consider athletic? Speed? Quickness? Jumping ability? I can see the size differential being an issue, but I bet Hornbeak can more than hold his own in the other areas. Didn't Hornbeak almost win a slam dunk contest in the offseason?

Hornbeak is from Arlington and Smart is from Flowermound. I would suspect these guys have faced each other before.

All of the above.

Hornbeak is not lacking in athleticism, it's just that Buddy is better equipped to guard Smart due to his size and strength, to go along with his quick feet and better than average hops. Both players have really good hands, plus they're super aggressive in their on-the-ball coverage.

Don't get me wrong, Hornbeak is a good defender. I said after watching him play on televison two years ago that he is as sound fundamentally as any high school kid I had seen in sometime. There are no glaring weaknesses in his game that a little more experience won't fix. If I had to choose the best freshman guard of the three, I would pick Je'lon.

That said, I believe that Buddy or Cam are better suited to guard a unique talent like Keith Smart. IMO, no one on our roster is capable of shutting him down. I do think we have three, and maybe four counting Cousins, who can make him work for his points.
