@franfraschilla: Long way to go, Sooner fans, but Lon Kruger has found a gem in 6-9 redshirt freshman, Jamuni McNeace. A gem!

@franfraschilla: .@OU_mbball has underrated freshman class with two redshirts (Buford & McNeace) to go with James & Odomes. Jamuni McNeace, a NICE surprise.

Fran is confirming what I have been saying since before Jamuni set foot on campus.

Think about how far this kid has come since he was a virtual newcomer to the game as a sophomore in high school. Two years later he was leading his team to a state semi-finals appearance, and already looking forward to the beginning of his college career at OU. It should also be noted that he went from a 5' 10" freshman to 6' 7" by the end of his sophomore season. He's listed at 6' 10" now, so in reality he is still adjusting to his body.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I think Jamuni McNeace will be a star before his career at OU is over.

Great stuff. Excited to see him play. He is as athletic as any cat we have on the roster.

Had in another thread ...

@franfraschilla: Didn't get a chance to Tweet driving back from Norman but Buddy Hield basically didn't miss a shot today. Scores like he breathes.

Tell him to save it for Memphis for now :ez-roll:

The practice I watched this summer, they weren't playing full court but were running some situational drills. In a low post drill, McNeace scored on 2 nifty spin moves. One going to his right, and then the other going to his left. He's quick and athletic. Especially for a 6'10" kid. His biggest deficiency is he needs to be stronger and more physical. JMHO.

I like it when we can afford to redshirt some players. Tyler Neal could have used a redshirt year.

Agree on redshirting when it makes sense. I don't think Neal made sense. Neal didn't need to get more talented. He needed to be bigger or more athletic, and a redshirt year likely wouldn't have changed that. Use the redshirt year on guys that need to work on skills. Guys that missed time due to injuries, or just started playing basketball late. McNeace is a perfect example of that. He wouldn't have contributed much of anything last year from what I saw, had he played.

x10. Agree completely. McNease, Matt Freeman, Brady Manek. Small guys usually just get better by more practice time and adjusting to the college game. A lot of college big men are still figuring out how to adjust to their body, as they likely had a big growth spurt recently since they are only 18. The ones that are ready to go are 4 and 5 stars for a reason, but there are plenty others that will be so much better as a 20 year old than 18, and if that can be their RS freshman season instead of their sophomore season, just gives you more time with their potential on your roster.

I agree. The exception being if you thought you would need a stop gap guy like Neal later down the road then it might be wise to redshirt him as he would be seasoned when you need him instead of it being a freshman or sophomore stop gap.

Disagree although he got early pt on a horrible team, Tyler was hitting his stride his 4th year and would have been a significant contributor last season if he had his 5th. Though he may not have wanted to stay after he graduated. If a guy can give you good minutes in his 4th and 5th years and is willing to work to get better then why not use your 11th or 12th ship on that guy.

Why wouldn't you want to stay in college? When I was 22-23, I would have chosen to freeze time and live that age for ever. I absolutely loved college. I wouldn't want to be a college student again at this age but it was awesome and the first few years of working sucked really bad. 50+ hour weeks with no money were horrible.

I don't think Neal would have been any better with a 5th year but we could have used him last year.

Agree. And that's the reason you decide to redshirt those guys but it is hard sometimes to know what you are going to need 4 years down the road.

If McNeace is playing this well already, I think we can agree that puts him a year or two further ahead in his development than we thought he'd be at this point.

I was surprised how good McNease was at the scrimmage. He doesn't shoot it very well, but really looked good around the rim.

He also looks like he has played a lot of ball. He moves very well without the ball. Times his movement to the rim well off of others misses, and seems to know how to maintain his path to the rim by jumping into and freezing the defender before going up for a shot.

I liked what I saw out of Lattin at the scrimmage. Particularly late, when he hit a jump hook and 12 ft turnaround on back to back possessions. Both moves looked very repeatable. I hadn't seen either of those before. So, it will be interesting to see how Lon plays everyone.

Nobody ever accused me of knowing anything about basketball, but from the film I have seen on AK, I am guessing he starts if healthy, and rotates with both Lattin and Mcnease.

If Buford's shooting at the scrimmage was real and not just a one day illusion, I'm not sure how you don't play him somewhere somehow. He looked really good, and I mean really good to me, but he might have just been having a good day. Those of you have been attending a lot of practices would know more.
