Gage Mayfield commits to OU

Gage Mayfield / Forward / 6-8 / Northport, Ala. / Hale County HS
The 6-8, 220-pound Mayfield is the owner of a 7-foot-1 wingspan and is regarded as the nation's No. 57 overall player by ESPN and No. 59 by 247Sports. The consensus four-star recruit is ranked the No. 1 player in Alabama by all three outlets and the country's No. 12 small forward by 247Sports.

From Northport, Ala., Mayfield was a 2024-25 all-state selection and led Hale County High School to an area championship. He averaged 17.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game for the Wildcats.

"The thing right away with Gage is his length and athleticism, and how those traits allow him to affect the game," said Moser. "For us, we're trending toward those long wings, especially now that we're in the SEC. He's also got very good ball skills for a player his size. He's able to bring it up in transition and his shot is improving daily.

"Defensively, he's really solid with that incredible wingspan. And he fits us because of how we're trying to create offense with our defense. He's blessed with his anticipation and motor, two vital intangible attributes."

Playing for the Pro One squad last spring and summer in the Under Armour Association, Mayfield was named Breakout MVP and earned second-team all-circuit honors after averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals per contest. During the spring-only circuit, he was named defensive MVP.

"Gage is such a great young man to be around," added Moser. "He's got the kind of energy on the court and in the locker room that's contagious, and our staff immediately connected with him. He's going to be a great fit and we're super excited he's a Sooner."

Mayfield, who committed to OU in September, chose the Sooners over Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

While I like his game, this now means OU will, again, have to live and die from the Portal.

OU could use another high school prospect or 2. Having to add 6 or 7 from the Portal every year isn't is a good way to live.

We have 4 seniors.

Blair left.

4 spots open. Not 6-7.

Bet we take a hs kid late signing. Then fill portal.

Of course subtractions are gonna happen. But less than you think this year would be my guess

Thats what what the majority of teams do nowadays tho..

It is easier for other teams with large NIL coffers. OU has to be selective, and that is hard to do in the Portal. Just not my preferred method of managing the roster.

I hope so. Rebuilding my whole roster through the Portal is not my preferred method of roster management. I prefer supplementing the roster of HS talent with Portal players. I know OU can't afford the best of the best, in either HS or the Portal, so they are in a tough spot.

Portal players are likely more proven bc their body of work. High school recruits are going to go by the wayside imo

Yes, but the good portal players are going to get to be too expensive for OU to even call, let alone have them answer. Just a tough place to be, HC at a school where the BMDs just doesn't care about basketball.
