Obviously, OU fans have had this discussion since the Tubbs era, if not before. Sorry to bring it up again, but it's really been weighing heavily on me lately.

Which comes first, great gameday atmosphere or a great team?

In my opinion, we could have a great game experience despite not having a championship caliber team. The Thunder did it their first year here. Most of us here have been to NBA games, especially OKC, and the entire experience is a blast. Granted, maybe that's because the team is good and because a lot of fans show up.

However, when you compare the Thunder experience, or that of watching the KU/UCLA game last night, or the MSU/Duke game, they're not even comparable. Surely, a better team and more fans would help that. However, even during the two years Blake was here, the atmosphere wasn't special save for a few exceptions.

The caliber of the team doesn't really have any influence on the timeout activities, the halftime shows, the introductions, the welcoming OU to the floor, etc.

The guy who has the mike during timeouts and such is just not good. Instead of just playing the "Bring 'em out bring 'em out" song, why not do something similar to OU football games with cool Contender music? Why not do a video before the team takes the floor AND a video during team introductions? Why do we not sing the Alma Mater before the games anymore? Why do we not have fans in shooting competitions during timeouts anymore? Why do we do strange promos like the guy wearing 50 t-shirts instead of something cool like the parachute drop at Thunder games? Why not have trivia competitions where entire sections win something if the question is answered correctly?

I really think our gameday people need to visit several NBA games and other college venues and get some ideas, as well as bring back past successful traditions.

Another question, is it illegal for colleges to play beats (not the band) while the ball is in play?

I think the student group Capelables do a great job with what they have (no student attendance).

I hope to God colleges are not allowed to play beats while the ball is in play. :ez-laugh: No offense, but that is one of the many reasons why the NBA is absolutely unwatchable. There should be a law against the P.A. guy starting chants at games, but I feel like I'm ranting now so I'll stop. :ez-laugh:

Anyways, I am just not sure how you can possibly have a good gameday atmosphere with less than 5,000 fans showing up in the LNC every night. You can do all the promotions you want, but my idea of a good gameday experience is a full house (or at least like 8-9k in attendance), a rowdy atmosphere, and a Sooner victory. Maybe I'm the only one, but I could really care less for 90% of all promotions I've ever seen at the college and NBA games I've attended.

Good points. And I agree, at the end of the day, all I care about is an OU victory. However, if you really feel that way, then your desire should be to have as many fans in the LNC as possible. One way at achieving that is to improve the experience, to make those two hours as entertaining as possible, even when the ball is not in play.

At least some fans go to NBA games not becuase they care about the teams or the game, but because the surrounding aspects make it an event which they want to be apart of.

In my opinion, the atmosphere starts with the students. The more you have, the rowdier they become and the more it radiates throughout the arena. The administration needs to start there first. The whiteheads just don't get into the games.

I agree; a good student section is a big part of gameday atmosphere. The top 2 teams in the country right now are Ohio State and Duke; watch each team play a home game this season and tell me which place has a better atmosphere lol. Duke is insane for every game, I saw Ohio State play Purdue on TV in a top 10 matchup last year and the place was dead lol.

Some programs have good gameday atmosphere regardless of a down season. Kansas was always a tough place to play in the early 80's before Larry Brown went there, and UNC in it's few down years was a tough place to play, as was Duke. Kentucky can be put in that pot, too. I'd even go so far as to say winning in Stillwater is tough because their fans get into the game and make a difference even when their team isn't very good.

OU has this same thing in football. Look at the sold out stadiums under the John Blake regime. The stadium wasn't full, but we had about 69K fans, which is a pretty good turnout (90% full) considering the product on the field. Nebraska continued their sellout streak and packed stadium even thru the Callahan years, etc.

However, OU basketball is not one of those programs that has this level of fan support. The team has to be in place before the fan support gets to a raucous level. Sure, the program has it's share of die-hard fans like Traveler and others, but not near the number as OU football or basketball at other schools. So, in order for OU to have good fan support, the product on the floor has to be in place and right now it's not.

There really weren't problems in the Tubbs era. OU was widely considered one of the toughest home crowds in the Nation. This is all in print in the preseason magazines. So it really wasn't a discussion during the Tubbs era.

When Sampson came to OU many Tubbs era fans refused to embrace the differenent style. that is when attendance became an issue. Now in fariness to Sampson and the fans, it had started to decline under Tubbs because he was fielding NIT teams rather than NCAA teams 3 of his last 4 seasons. Regardless, the big change came when he left and OU took a 180 in style.

I also think that a change in chants or music the band plays would be a blessing. The band plays the same 3 songs day in and day out. Cheerleaders obviously can't get a chant going so I think the band needs to be creative and get something catchy going that the students can get the crowd into. Sitting at the Big 12 tournament last few years, even schools like Iowa St. have unique chants that get their fans into it. As much as I love yelling Boomer or Sooner, we need to expand. What were some of the things the crowd did during the Tubbs era? The only memory I have back then was watching the students yell and clap Bull**** to the refs!

the thing about nba games is they sell alcohol. so if the team sucks they can just get wasted instead.

This would perk things up.

lol, yeah that's it.

Let's diversify our sing alongs, that will definitely pack the LNC.

Was more of just a rant about how we have nothing to get the crowd into it besides a good product in which we don't have...

You feel like you are ranting after 2-3 short sentences? Interesting.

Yep, I'm just gonna throw some stuff out there.

"Sparks Fly" by Taylor Swift
"With Arms Wide Open" by Creed
"Tonight" by Enrique Iglesias...I mean it might send a subliminal message to the girls by me, never a bad thing ya know. :facepalm

Just as long as we don't do "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban, I hear that one did not work out so well for Rich Rodriguez...

Lol, you are correct, I should have continued that rant. Crowd atmosphere is the only thing I have above average knowledge about w/ regards to basketball, oh well though...
