Gregg Marshall

I live in Wichita and have been to many WSU games this year and the past. While he may recruit "decently," he is not a good "coach of the game." I am pretty good friends with a G.A who was under Gregg., that is now at a different school. Marshall is an idiot!! Those of you that want to "settle," let's talk in two or three years. By that time, we will be known as the NIT team of the Big 12.

thank you warvet. appreciate that information.

I think far too many people are hung up on mid-major this and mid-major that.....OBVIOUSLY the playing field has evened out the last few years and mid-mjor teams AND coaches can compete. There isn't some magic button a guy pushes to all of a sudden be a high major coach.....you either know the game and can coach...or you don't. If a guy is a proven winner at a mid-major he could do just as well at a high-major.....if you have a system....and you recruit guys who fit that system, get your guys to play hard and you coach em' up, you will be able to compete at a high level.

Look at Butler...they have good players but they don't have a team full of high-major players coming out of HS.....same at OU....you don't have to have a team full of McD's All Americans to compete in the Big XII....A guy could add one or two pieces to what is already here and win consistently with good coaching. We could use a talent upgrade but they can compete now with the right pieces added to the mix.

This + Gregg Marshall = NIT or CBI in the Big 12

Greenbug, I still think you are actually Gregg (hyping yourself for the job). Afterall Doug did say you called OU directly.

there may not be some magic button to coach in high major d1, but there are differing styles that can contribute to success or failure depending on the types of players a school can support.

for example: if Roy Williams was not at a place where he could recruit the best of the best then he would fail. period. you can't play his style and win consistently against the competition he plays with half-assed talent.

by that same token you take a huggy or chaney or kelvin and they could historically win with "lesser heralded" recruits because of their style.

I have high aspirations for OU and it's basketball program. I want it to succeed as much as everyone. I long for the days of Wayman, Shawn Clark, Mookie, Harvey, Stacey King, Tim Mc, Choo Kennedy and the like......but honestly, I would take 2-3 years of NIT ball over the last two years ANY DAY.

That being said....I'm not hyping Gregg MArshall or anything.....I just want someone in here that runs a system....knows the type of players they want to recruit......and someone that can get a team to COMPETE and have a chance to win every game. (not to WIN every game....but have a CHANCE to win every game) and I will be happy.

You can recruit to OU......you may not compete with UNC, Duke and the likes for top-tier players....but you can be VERY successful in Norman. I don't think every player Capel recruited cannot compete in the Big XII...I just didn't think he really had a system to ALLOW them to. I also think some guys here have the impression that MOST mid-major guys have problems evaluating talent and recruiting it. I don't think that is the case at all.....I think they recruit mid-major talent at mid-major schools because that is what they can get there. I think MOST good mid-major guys would have no problems recruiting high-major talent if they were in a high major situation.

and the really good ones will win with what MANY of you would consider lesser talent. If you find a mid-major guy who consistently wins their conference and gets to the NCAA tourney....most of those guys would be successful at a bigger school. They may not win the tourney...but A LOT of them could be successful at OU. Just my opinion.

I agree with your midmajor assessment. I wasn't agreeing with Greenbug. I also agree that I would take NIT ball over the last years. However, we are a perennial-NCAA tournament program, not a perennial-NIT program, and, therefore, shouldn't expect or hope for any less.

BOOMER SOONER!!!!

I want an NCAA tourney trip basically every year....and a chance at a Final Four or championship before my lifetime is over. LOL hahahaha

Although I want post-season appearances EVERY year, more than 1 or 2 trips to anything less than the NCAA tourney would be equally as bad a coaching job as Capel has done the past two years. NIT/CBI UNACCEPTABLE!!!
