Oddly enough I have a co-worker that travels alot for buisness. He follows high school recruiting real closely. We were talking today about the signing of grooms and he said he actually got a chance to watch the kid play last year.

He said that grooms is what he is. He is not going to be the leading scorer or put the team on his back. But he is a consistent scorer (he said to expect 8 points a game with only around 6-8 shots put up a game...he said grooms shoots a good fg%)....he said grooms is excellent on the defense end....said grooms has above average handles and distributes the ball every well

He went on for about 8 minutes on how good of a leader grooms seemed to be when he watched him play....

He also watched guerrero play this year. We got into this conversation because I said I was happy we signed grooms because we struck out on guerrero. He said guerrero is EXTREMELY talented but he feels we have the better PG in grooms. He said guerrero has the potential to carry teams on his back assuming he full fills his potential. He said he thought guerrero would struggle in a conference like the big 12 due to the size and that guerrero plays "soft" were as grooms plays alittle more physical.

He said guerrero is very cocky and at times that seemed to rub his teammates the wrong way. He said if guerrero wasnt hitting shots he would sort of "pout" and stop being as vocal

He thinks we went the "safe" route with grooms as he thinks grooms will be the better PG.

I think we went the "safe" way because Guerrero had already committed and was firm to the pokes.

Nice to hear about their respective games, but agree that we went with the route that was available to us. The day we let go of Capel, we didn't get the other kid...I'm okay with that.

He said he believes grooms will be the better PG...he thinks guerrero basically will be a flop

He said the safe route because we know what we are getting with grooms...we are getting someone who wont make mistakes, someone who is a good leader......he did say from what he saw of grooms and what he saw of blair on tv he thinks grooms will eventually be the starter...he said grooms is a better shooter than blair and much quicker so thats why he woudl win out

"Safe" doesnt mean it wasnt a good get....I got the vibe he meant by safe was the we know what we are getting, grooms is developed...he isnt raw like guerrero....
For instance, bookout would have been a "safe" get out of highschool...because you knew exactly what you would get out of him

Hopefully Grooms develops into a Quannas White clone.

I'm really starting to think Grooms can be a Quannas type player for us. if he's anything like Quannas, we will be in good shape. I'm excited for next season already.

That recount makes it sound like Guerrero is more like TMG.

If Grooms is Quannas like on defense and running the offense then this team could be very competitive next year.

Absolutely!! We won a bunch with Quannas.

You're right in that OU went in another direction to sign a point guard after Capel was let go and Guererro committed to Okie State. That doesn't mean that taking the "safe" route will not prove to be our best option. Guererro was Capel's primary target at the point. No really knows what LK expects in his floor leader, or if he would have tried to sign Cezar had he still been available?

Guererro is more of a scoring guard, and an undersized one at that. Point guards don't average 28 ppg their senior season and go off for games in the 30s and 40s if they're trying to set up their teammates. By all accounts, Grooms is a true point guard who looks to distribute the ball to his teammates before making any attempt to score on his own.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out for the Pokes and for us?

I think Guerrero will be the better PG. He's younger and has a lot more potential. Grooms was a very good pickup this late in the signing period, but he's not our lone saving grace like some people are making him out to be. I'm still pumped he's a Sooner though! :clap

It's amazing how your co-worker happened to be traveling in cities where these guys were playing.

I think argument here wasn't that we aren't better off with Grooms, but that it probably wasn't an either/or scenario. We have no idea whether CG would have even opened the door for Kruger, or whether Kruger even tried to contact him. He was committed elsewhere, and probably not an option for us at this point anyway.

To frame the discussion as though LK made the "safe" pick is misleading because we don't know that both players were available to us.

That said, right now, I'll take the guy who is more ready to be a true PG and play solid D, with no complaints. But if we had ended up with CG, you wouldn't hear me griping about that by any stretch.

I hear you there! I dunno if he can be as good as Quannas though....but he will at the minimum add more leadership to the team I think

Quannas White was a great PG. Grooms juco stats arent anywhere close to Q's. I do believe he will give us a major boost.

Quannas White=
Earned third-team All-America and first-team all-conference and all-region honors as a sophomore at Midland (Texas) Community College ... Averaged 16.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game for the 25-8 Chaparrals ... Shot .538 from three-point range (56-for-104) and .818 from the foul line

Guerrero once started tazing and pepper spraying a baby squirrel and he made me watch.

agreed. Today's game works better fot teams that have PGs that can score.
