How about a game thread for us unfortunates?

We did one thing that good rebounding teams do. We reached out for the ball. Last year, we often let balls drop to the floor between three players, none of whom even reached out for it. Our hands tended to be everywhere.

L Williams has surprised me tonight. She's had a good night.

That girl can score..reminds me of Vegas. She should at least be the 6th man..Funny after tonight but this team will have trouble scoring at times and they will really need her to break down a defense.

After the first ten minutes, I didn't think this team could beat any body, then they started to settle down and play some basketball.

This team moves the ball better than we have seen in a while. I did not see too much needless dribbling. I liked the fact that our spacing was pretty good, and the kids did a nice job of moving the defense with skip passing and some nice fakes on the perimeter. What I didn't like is not using our height advantage and post kids up on the block. We settled too much on the outside shot, and that is going to kill us.

Gabi is relentless. Excellent ball mover, good solid defense, hustles all over the court. That is saying something when at half time she is your leading rebounder with 9 and one of the smallest players on the court. She didn't shoot very well but I really like her, she may have earned a starting position.

Maddie looked rusty, but worked out of it and is going to be fine. Just needs some more game experience to get back in the groove.

Peyton can be our go to player if she just becomes a little more selfish in the open court. Really like her demeanor.

Kaylon is better, but still needs to watch silly fouls.

Sharane is our rock. She is steady and just gets better each season.

Nicole is going to be a stud for this team, when she shoots with no conscience she is deadly, when she thinks about it, forget it. I think she can be a double digit scorer every night.

I like what McKenna and Vivi bring to the table. Just a few more games under their belt and they are going to earn valuable post play.

Lanesia was a pleasant surprise and as she gains more confidence, she could easily be a back up point to Gabi.

Gioya is vastly improved and will be hard to keep off the court.

Derrica had an awful shooting night, but did a lot of other things well, I hope she doesn't become strictly a streak shooter.

T'Ona is another asset at the point, still needs to develop an outside game, but her defense will help her get playing time.

My favorite and I thought most productive team on the floor was Maddie, Nicole, Kaylon, Gioya, and Gabi. I think all said and done, you will have ten kids seriously fighting for starting positions, and that ain't a bad thing.

The biggest surprise for me was Whitney Ritchie. She is smart, knows how and where to move in the offense. Defends, handles the ball, hustles, and can shoot the ball. She is more than just a glorified bench warmer. If we ever get in serious foul trouble, I certainly wouldn't be afraid of playing her if we had to. She certainly wouldn't get you beat.

Our biggest weakness, seems to be off side defense. Too many drives to the basket for lay ups, luckily they missed a bunch. Yes we did out rebound this team, but you should, fundamentally we still need to do some work on blocking out, but I agree with what has been said, we went to the ball instead of watching the ball fall to the floor. Much better anticipation. Lastly some forced passes into the teeth of the defense. I think Sherri addressed that at the after game comments that they will get that worked out.

This team has some great potential, I am anxious to see how the progress during the season. We certainly have some outstanding guards on this team, it will be fun to see who rises to the top.

I was going to say the same thing. Her moves and drives to the hoop were quick and the way she pulled up reminded me of Vegas.

This was my first time seeing Maddie play and although - as mentioned before - she seemed a bit rusty she just looks like a ballplayer. I really like what I see in her.

Overall I was impressed with the athletes we seem to have and also the talent. I realize we weren't playing a great team tonight but they had some nice players and seemed to be well coached. I'll be interested to see how this team is once conference play begins. I'll also be interested to see how Sherri divies up the playing time. It's been easy the last few years but once Kellog gets back she has 13 girls that can play.

Some problems that carry over year after year.

Too many forced passes and too many turnovers, particularly unforced ones.

weak one on one defense allowing too much penetration and easy open outside shots.

Fair number of positives

Gabbi is our point guard. She will score better but her strength is quick setup, good passes, getting up the court quick, good penetrating and dish, and tonight a fearsome rebounder.

Kornet is much better. Playing more within herself and with confidence.

KayKay Ok and I think better and more consistent and also more consistent with bad fouls.

Maddie looked pretty good but doesn't seem to quite have the flair that she had as a freshman. Hopefully she hasn't lost a step.

Little will be a solid all-around player. Hopefully she will get around 15 per game.

Carter looked about the same to me. Does a lot of good things but still gets ahead of herself and makes too many forced passes that have very little chance of success.

I liked both of the big frosh. ViVi has very good hands and Treece is a battler.

Derica still looking to not miss her shots rather than to hit them. We have so many good shooters that don't hit their shots.

Williams was great. Quickest player on the team and has good body control on her drives. Surprised that she was the 12th player in the game for OU.

Campbell still Campbell.

I think the 5 guard setup will work against some teams. with Kornet 6-2 and Maddie 6-1 we have a chance to rebound with the quickness that lineup provides. And Sharane always plays bigger than she is.

we have a lot of players who can penetrate effectively. We need to do that and rather than force a pass, kick out for an open trey. That is what they did very effectively against us tonight.

At the beginning of the game I began to think that a 5th place finish in conference was pretty ambitious. But like all of Sherri's teams they began to hit the big runs so maybe we are OK but I think it will be hard for us to beat the top tier teams unless we do a much better job of taking care of the ball, defending the penetration, and with the pressure defense.

I still have to see Sherri using her depth. She has not done that in previous years.

SoonerinNC, very good post. I agree the PG position is settled with Gabbi and I didn't see anyone close.

Peyton is also a solid starter, she can score in a variety of ways and she has a high basketball IQ.

I think the jury is still out on Maddie. We just need to watch her over the next few games to see if she can lock down a starting job. I didn't see the speed and quickness that I was hoping to see based on some comments I have read on here.

Sharane is a starter.

Kaylon was still the frustrating player she was last year and I hope Sherri can bring Treece and ViVi along quickly and let one of them start. Both have good hands and both have soft shots so I believe either one is capable of taking over the middle, although ViVi needs to fully recover from her injury as she wasn't moving that well.

Kornet got hot from outside and looked good. I look for her to fight Maddie for the SF job and last night she won round one.

We have capable backups in Carter, Williams, T'Ona, etc

I didnt see the game but I would be surprised if:
1.we didnt need to play better defense,
2.turn the ball over,
3.rebound better.
These are constants with Sherri. Sometimes the rebounding is fair but not consistently. She has also said that she doesnt substitute well. That will be a challenge this year.

From what I saw last night, you are right on the money!

rockjunkie and SoonerinNC----excellent posts!

Since this was Southeastern, I'm not exactly sure what we can take away. They did seem to be a better team than I had expected, and they did have the ability to expose some of our weaknesses. I'm not sure that all D-1 teams have the ability to expose our inability to stop dribble penetration.

They weren't big, and they got Kay Kay into foul trouble. She looked good, but against people who were a lot smaller. Can she play against bigger people and stay on the floor? I really hope that ViVi and McKenna Treece come on fast. I think we are going to need them.

The shooting didn't look good at first. But, somehow, we did end up with fifty percent, albeit a weak-looking fifty percent. We seemed to have some hesitancy with our shots early in the game, and we didn't seem to be wanting to take that shot. We had so much fun passing to wide open people who were also afraid to take the shot. We probably needed LaNesia to start just to get us ready to shoot. I don't know if she has any game other than "let's go score." I didn't see what else she could do.

Maddie seemed a bit uncertain, and I noticed that she lagged behind a couple of times on transition, not crossing midcourt until we were partially set up. I'm not sure what that was about. She also showed that she can dribble the length of the court. When she shot, she seemed comfortable, and she may have been two of two on threes. I haven't seen a box score that showed attempts yet. But, she looked a little uncertain. Yet, she seemed to have the best vision of the court of anyone.

Peyton---shoot. Peyton gets points quietly. It didn't look like she was scoring much. Then, she had ten or twelve, and I only remembered five. She needs to get to her shot and take it. She actually seemed better on about ten foot jumpers than from outside. What I did not see is how good she is at moving the ball, either by passing or on the dribble. She had others on the floor who were doing that.

Gabi is ready. Her shot was simply a matter of confidence. The form is good. She can do whatever she wants to do on the court. The ball seems to find her, but good basketball players tend to be where the ball goes. Maddie tends to be where the ball goes as well.

I didn't get a good read on Sharane last night. I don't know whether she is taking the lead as a returning scorer or is trying to be just a steady performer. She could be effective in a four-guard offense that has other tall players on court to help her inside. Peyton and Maddie are not short. Gabi doesn't play short.

One of the keys to what I saw last night is that we don't play little like we have at times in the past. Gabi, LaNesia, Peyton, Nicole, and Maddie are not little girls. They play strong. Gabi is built along the same lines as Dungee, and nobody is going to push them around.

I watched the 2002 FF game against Duke that was posted on the Stacey Dales thread. There you had essentially a six player team with no real post play especially when DJ subbed in for JT. It was Caton Hill and four guards. The thing I noticed most of all was the rapidity. There was no point guard. Whoever got the rebound or the steal simply took off. And in the half court set, the ball movement was extraordinary. Very fast passing and ball reversal. The contrast to Morgan Hook dribbling around at the top of the key could not have been more striking. So, perhaps this team is constructed like the 2002 team and can keep it moving fast. One other point. They sent four to the glass every time, and all the guards rebounded. So if Ortiz was our leading rebounder, that is an interesting development.

I just watched the first half again. It is interesting that we scored 15 points in 12 minutes. Then, LaNesia came into the game. We scored 31 in the next 8 minutes. Once she attacked the basket, it seems that everyone became more alive and involved.

From just watching the first half, I think my starting unit might be:
Ortiz
Peyton Manning (that's for Tubbs), Peyton Little
Nicole Kornet
Maddie Manning
Sharane

I'm not so sure that I would start a post unless Kaylon can get her act together. LaNeisa and Carter were next on the list.

rockjunkie and SoonerinNC----excellent posts! I agree! Several good post. My additional thoughts on team personnel.
Gabi, Nicole, Derica, Gioya, t'ona, Sharane, are good one on one defenders. Maddie and Peyton better at team defense, but Maddie will improve as she gets back in game speed. Peyton has got to work on one on one as #24 (Williams) from SE State left her behind a lot early, and I think when we switched assignments, our team defense was better.
This will be a lot better rebounding team as Gabi, Nicole, Derica, Tona, Sharane, LaNesia, have good hands and really chase the ball well.
Kay Kay's fouls didn't matter whether the offensive player was short or tall. She scored well inside, and forced attention there. 13 minutes, 15 points 7 rebounds is good-4 TO and 4 fouls is not. Both freshmen centers were solid, and will be real contributors.
Maddies 5 TO's too much, but also think that will improve. Gioya's official 1 TO is inaccurate -she was responsible for several, but other aspects of game really good.
Overall--good outing, great promise, lots of competition for playing time. USE OUR DEPTH
I finally saw Gabi, and she is our point guard!

After watching the first half three times and the second half twice, there were some interesting things.

1. Will all of those cross-court passes work against D-1 competition?
2. Gabi had at least three turnovers: a wild pass to start the game, an attempt to feed the post, and a charge. Maddie, credited with five, had four, one of which should not have been a turnover. She traveled (stutter-step start), bad pass on entry feed to Derica, and a charge. She was credited with a turnover when she lost the ball inside. That was actually due to her arm being grabbed while she was dribbling. The ball went where she put it, but her hand went somewhere else due to the fact that they had her wrist.
3. ViVi, Maddie, and Gabi tended to get the ball out and down the court quickly with long outlet passes. They set up Peyton quite well a couple of times on breaks.
4. I want to see ViVi and McKenna against D-1 competition. They looked pretty good against Southeastern. Both had blocks, and they had good body control. I want to see them against bigger players.
5. Kay Kay scored at will. But, her problems scoring last year came with centers who were as tall as she. She tended to put up level shots that were rushed. Has she learned?
6. Washington's guards are good. This is a good matchup for our guards to learn.

Syb, the cross court (skip passes) will certainly work against D-1 competition if we make the defense move. If we dribble, make one pass, and then try to skip over the defense, more times than not it will not be successful. Good spacing and ball movement will help make the skip pass a success.
