I think one thing most people don't take into consideration is that Lon hasn't been at as high a profile program as OU. Kansas State in the late 80's was not a big draw and neither was Florida or Illinois in the 90's or UNLV before he got there. Not that Illinois or UNLV have ever been a big draw. He built up all three programs from mediocrity to NCAA Tourny teams. It should also be noted that he left Florida for to take the Illinois job and left Illinois for the NBA. Had he stayed at Florida he possibly could have had success on possibly the same level as Donovan had when he took over the program Kruger left.
Illinois in the 90s wasn't as high profile as OU in the 2010s? Illinois was a perennial tourney team under Lou Henson, who landed his share of big-time recruits.
To his credit, Kruger landed some high-profile in-state recruits at Illinois. His last Illinois team included...
Frank Williams (Illinois Mr. Basketball, McDonald's AA)
Marcus Griffin (McDonald's AA)
Sergio McClain (Illinois Mr. Basketball
Brian Cook (Illinois Mr. Basketball, McDonald's AA)
He left behind a lot of talent for Self. But it wasn't unprecedented recruiting success for Illinois. Henson signed plenty of studs, including Nick Anderson, Kendall Gill, and Marcus Liberty. That Flyin' Illini squad was stacked.
Florida wasn't a high-profile program until Donovan made it one. Kruger didn't recruit anywhere near as well as Donovan, even after his Final Four run. At Florida, Kruger didn't pull in the type of recruits that accounted for Donovan's early success at Florida (Miller, Haslem, Dupay, etc.).
Twenty years later, Kruger is doing a better job of parlaying his success into better recruiting.
