I'm talking about knee-jerk reactions to perceived issues within any sports program. The one that keeps coming to my mind happens a lot on this board, but also happens on other OU boards for other programs has to do with recruiting. And in particular, there seems to be a knee-jerk reaction that any in-state kid who signs with someone other than OU, was one the coach "let get away...."

My reaction to that, first off, is something like this: :facepalm :facepalm . I don't necessarily know why some kids don't pick OU, but it's always been my assumption that there is an underlying issue of some sort. It was at least strongly rumored that some in-state coaches held long-standing grudges against Sherri because her Norman teams pounded their teams in prep competition.

I've also heard for years that some in-state football programs absolutely hate OU for whatever reason. I'm sure that's the case in girls' basketball at times with some coaches.

There were also rumored grade issues with some players in-state, and I also support any OU coach who rejects an athlete who'd be a "cancer" to team chemistry. Anyone who got disgusted with the '09-10 OU men's team has to remember how awful that season was.

It's also a case at times that some kids just want to leave the state and "see the world." That's a big reason OU lured Beky Preston out of Albuquerque, along with having a better program at the time.

I don't claim to have any insight that guarantees that OU didn't "let someone get away," but if you're going to make that claim just try to have a little proof. That's all I ask.

Have always heard the same thing as NMSooner about Coale running up the score on many schools as a high school coach. Those things are not easily forgotten. Those coaches may noe be school AD,s or administrators if they are no longer coaching. I guess she saw the other side of it her first 2 years at OU.

Totally agree! Well said!

People in the high schools, coaches, administrators, teachers, etc. all have their favorite teams.

When I was at Star-Spencer we had a Div I class running back and our asst principal was constantly hyping OSU to him. He ended up at OU but a knee injury wrecked his career. He was almost a twin in ability to Eddie Hinton.

The only question I have is whether cancelling the womens summer basketball camps have hurt our relationships with the coaches and even high school players.

If BigTime's comment earlier this year is true, is there much point to having the camps other than as a PR exercise? He seemed to be saying that you couldn't get the best players in Texas to come to your camp unless you paid their coaches lots of cash to work your camp - I believe extortion is another word for it. Don't get me wrong, if OU had had camps when my kids were in school, my daughters would have wanted to go, but they weren't even NAIA prospects! :ez-laugh:

San Toi DeBose?

Yes, San Toi was a really good kid as well as a superb athlete. He was also the key guy on my basketball team.
