I Hope Football Officiating Doesn't Spill into Basketball

I've posted enough on here through the years for everyone to know I don't generally whine about officiating. However, anyone who saw the Bedlam game tonight has to be thinking what I'm thinking - let's get out of this conference ASAP. All we can hope for besides a quick exit is that the type of officiating we saw tonight does not spill into basketball.

There were some big missed calls late, but it's BS to think it was intentional. OU was on the receiving end of some big calls early. I think the refs got those right, but if the screw job is in, they don't wait until the last couple of drives of the game to start making them.

We'll agree to disagree WT. I think it was intentional. I'm also mad about some things that had nothing to do with the refs such as Lincoln not making counter-adjustments to the halftime adjustments OSU made on defense. The Pokes had a great season this year, and I'm genuinely envious of their defense. I believe they got better coaching than the Sooners throughout the year. There are a lot of things I will give credit to the Pokes for...but I want to get out of this conference YESTERDAY.

Honest question, do you think we're going to walk into the SEC and get "fair" officiating?

It's going to be worse.

OU's defense was every bit the equal of oswho's tonight. We outgained them, outrushed them, outpassed them. We had more sacks and we won the turnover battle

Eric Gray's inexplicable decision to fair catch a punt at the four (which he then muffed) and Caleb Williams' mind-boggling ineptitude against a zone defense were what lost the game (12 penalties didn't help, nor did the noncalls that oswho benefited from -- especially the blatant pass interference in the final minute -- a non-call like that overrides and outweighs any calls or non-calls in the first three quarters).

As soon as it became apparent two or three games ago that Caleb stinks against the zone, Riley should have opted for a 2-QB system, as a backup plan if nothing else. That Spencer got no run tonight is maddening. CW was bad the whole second half and he refused to run until the last second, when almost invariably it was too late. There were easily a dozen plays where, if he'd taken off a moment or two earlier, we were assured of a first down (and who know how much more) but he kept looking downfield, trying to solve the zone, until he either got sacked or the rushers were close enough to limit him to just two or three yards.

I hate all losses but this one really sucked. I was ready to be convinced that oswho was the better team this year, but I remain unsold on that notion. We should have won that game.

I've seen a lot of players in football this year try to field catches inside the 10 and I've always been against it. You have a higher chance at muff/fumble in that spot. There are very few positives in trying to catch inside the 10. Maybe you get a few yards of field position better but there are times where a bounce can also go your way and make it go to the end zone. There are just so few positive justifications to allow for fair catch/returns inside the 10.

But overall OSU gave OU 9 free points. OU gave OSU 7. And OSU still won by 4. They were the better team and have shown that all year. Where as OU's been pretty ****ty most of the year and should have lost at least 4 or 5 more games.

A fan's frustration (which I shared, believe me) over wins that we wish weren't as close as they were doesn't mean we "should" have lost those games.

The two muffs canceled each other out, but the safety was earned. It was a very good defensive play.

Williams' ongoing struggles with zone defense, his reluctance to aggressively use his legs to counter that zone and Lincoln's refusal to turn to the five-star QB he had on his bench were why we lost. And we still might have won if not for a terrible non-call in the final minute. We'll never know.

The Tennessee transfers had the two biggest drops of the game.

I've got no problem picking up the flag for the late hit on Brooks. It's hard enough to play defense anymore in the modern game. It's not a dance floor out there. I've got a BIG problem with the back judge not having the stones to call defensive PI in the endzone on 2nd and 10. O-State spent a good portion of the third quarter Aggie-ing up the game like they always do. We made the soul-crippling mistakes that allowed them to remain in the game and, ultimately, win it.

Such is life.

I wouldn’t have had a problem had they not thrown the flag on the hit on Brooks, but once they did throw it, I can’t believe they picked it up. I’m not sure I’ve seen a flag picked up in that precise scenario. But you’re right that the PI noncall was by far the bigger and more egregious decision. I also don’t understand why we decided to take four straight shots at the end zone after the Williams run. We had enough time to still work the sidelines and pick up 8-10 yards rather than swinging for the fences every snap.

Picked up flag on Brooks was bad. No PI decided the game. Williams has to run more without it being a design.

Four potential game changing calls that went against us:
  • Forced fumble by Woodi Washington in the first half that was blown dead
  • The non-call PI on West (it may have been Darby) in the end zone in the first half.
  • Picking up the flag on the unsportsmanlike call when Brooks was tackled late.
  • Non PI call on Hazelwood on the last drive.

All of the above were killers in a close game that could have changed the outcome. Having said that, CW absolutely freezes up against a zone, especially when the defense drops 8. And he refuses to throw to his safety valve out in the flat. Lincoln could resolve some of this issue with play-calling, however CW has to get better at seeing the field and decision-making. In the end, I thought OU outplayed OSU for large stretches of the game. But the difference ended up being the kickoff return for a TD.....absolutely inexcusable.

Because the officiating was so noticeable, one thing that isn’t getting quite as much attention as it deserves is our special teams play. It would be hard to be worse in the return and coverage game if we tried. We have a phenomenal punter and a good kicker, but we give up long returns and present zero threat in the return game. Last night was about the first time all season we even tried to return kickoffs, and it cost us 10 yards each time. And in an obvious fair catch situation, I have no idea why Mims isn’t the guy back for the punt return rather than Grey. Teddy Lehman has said all along that special teams could cost us a close game, and here we are.

AGREED! Also, Caleb Williams was pushed well out of bounds after his long run at the end of the game...and NO CALL! That would have been huge...half the distance of the goal at least.

These type of bad/no calls normally only tighten games up. We should be good enough to overcome them. Besides the calls/no calls already listed were holding calls, not the big obvious ones but the ticky tack usually not called on either side, yet they got us for a couple and some of the strangest ball spots.

As far as CW and zone coverage , Lincoln needs to figure out what works for CW, receivers read the coverage and run routes CW understands. Really though he is playing over Rattler because of the offensive line, which hasn't been real good for several years, that's where the real issues are.

Perhaps the point of the thread is the conference has it out for OU in football, at least last night.Crap Lincoln is gone

Looks like Lincoln is gone. I never felt he was a fit at OU anyway.

This is going to get crazy, signing day, transfer portal.

Not to mention OU’s California recruiting pipeline going to USC with LR!

I threw up in my mouth when I typed that!
