better be a miracle worker or someone who knows how to help build a program. This is a very important hire. Also someone who knows how to recruit talent with character.

I think more than a great recruiter, we need a hard-ass to keep punks like TMG in line. People give coach O a lot of credit for being a recruiter, but I think Capel isn't getting enough credit for his recruiting skills.

Are there any assistants out there with OU ties that we would consider? Someone with more invested in being a Sooner might be better at keeping them in line and getting them to work hard.

i wouldnt mind gillespie as an assistant... im not ready to give him the big job yet though...

Really don't know who Capel should hire, but I was looking at some old Sooner Spectator Mags.fall issue 2007 talking about Capel hiring O.Taliaferro.Had some great quotes 'first of all, countless hours -lots of time communicating with people getting to know recruits,by phone, writing letters"used to be text messaging explaining Coach O.about his tireless methods.Capel also quotes that he looks for coaches with great character, your role as a teacher,we try to teach them life lessons.I just don't want a good recruiter I want a good coach says Capel. Now that Coach O. is part of the family he wants to not only cultivate future OU legends, but also solid young men..My o my how things change so fast..Go Sooners!!!!!

I think some of you have nailed it regarding the importance of this hiring. This staff needs a guy that can play the bad cop role with these kids. I don't think the recruiting is as important as being able to lay down the law and preach defense. Coach Cline and Coach Betts are both really solid recruiters (obviously Coach Capel is as well).

Just my thoughts. I don't have any specific names but I'm sure there are guys out there to fit that bill.

I would throw some serious cash at Bob Hoffman. He would be the ideal fit on our staff with his Southwest connections and he was Kelvins top assistant while he was here.

We need a veteran coach, preferably a former long time head coach who is past his prime now, to take a role beside Capel on the bench to help him grow and learn as a coach. Joe C needs to shell out if need be to hire this kind of guy, the investment he has already made in Capel and the program warrants not skimping out and making sure this program is back on the right path.

In addition the power on who to hire should not be Capel's to make, while he should have some input imo the main decision making on this should be done by Joe C.

Probably a combination of some maturity and tough disciplinary presence.
Very evident Jeff needs help in mangaging.

I am sure that any coach hire in any sport is vetted by University administration. So every hire has a consultative aspect to it. Capel has to find a coach who passes that vetting process without having an assistant forced on him - it won't work. If he is not competent enough after what he has been through to have learned some very important lessons, including the kind of coach he needs to get going again, then he should not be the coach.

Hang in there Jeff and Joe C. Hope to see some Sooner Magic over the next few weeks.

Whether it works or not I have serious doubts that Capel has the capacity right now to realize what is best for the program and who would be the best hire for the program. Imo he lost that right with the nonsense that is going on right now and Joe C is well within his power to impose a coach on Capel. The problems the program is having does not just involve Capel or the basketball program as a whole, it could potentially affect, yes (shutter) the football team and the university as a whole. Whether you believe that means Capel shouldnt be coach here anymore is a different topic.

I wouldn't mind seeing Tommy Griffin in that position. He is well known on the AAU circuit, especially in states like Oklahoma and Texas that are very important to our recruiting efforts. He could also bring his two sons in as enforcers if players get out of line too much.

He would be a great hire IMO.

With all due respect, if they were all great recruiters, would we be in this mess right now?

Recruiting isn't just a race to sign the most burger boys, it's about putting together individuals who can help a program win games and play for championships. If you take out Blake Griffin, the best recruit to the program so far is either Crocker or Cade Davis...that's not solid recruiting.

Obviously, if Tiny is allowed to stay and is indeed changing his attitude, then he will bypass these 2 guys rather quickly, but it doesn't sound like this will happen.

Recruiting is more than finding 1 year players...especially if those 1 year players produce a 13-18 season.

I just bet Tommy wouldn't even need Blake and Taylor as enforcers. :)

Tommie Griffin would be a great choice.

If they went for an older ex-head coach, as MercedesSooner pointed out, who can mentor Capel, maybe Charlie Spoonhour? He wouldn't need to recruit, just play the role of Port Robertson and help Capel work on winning gameplans.
