Why do we miss out on so much talent inside the the state of oklahoma? Henry, Orten just to name a few, I know its the kids decision and some kids want to leave home but if you just think about it we have seen some good talent leave this state. I think this would solidify some of our problems and just cherry pick around the US.

Well, first off, usually there just isn't that much talent. You probably only are naming a few because there only are a few.

Yeah... and the handful of "big-time" hoops recruits that Oklahoma produces just tend to go out of state to Duke, KU, Syracuse, etc.

Blake Griffin is one of the few who stuck around.

In fact, I don't know what OU fans would have to complain about in this regard... because the few "big-time" Oklahoma recruits who have stayed in-state over the past, say, 20 years, have gone to OU.

Have there been any other recent McDonald's AAs that have stayed in state other than Ryan Humphries or Blake Griffin? I can't think of any.

OSU's biggest in-state recruits over the past 15-20 years have been Terrance Crawford, Joe Adkins and Chianti Roberts. I don't believe any of them were McDAAs.

Wasn't Obi Muonolo a Jordan Classic participant?

I do think we need more of the Cade Davis type role players.

First of all OU and OSU do not miss out on all the in state talent. We just tend to notice the kids that leave the state. Sheldon Williams left the state but Bookout and Alexander stayed. Blake Griffin stayed but Orton and Henry left. I think there is a tendancy to take for granted the guys that stay and focus on the guys that got away.

Second, the media just absolutely screws OU when it comes to basketball. OU has a great program but the media down plays it. That helps young kids have a perception that OU is not a good place to go.

Third, many of the best players want to go to a "basketball school". They select schools like KU, Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina. When a kid is a star player at one of those schools he is the big man on campus. When a kid is a star player at OU or Texas he is second to the star football players.

But he was just as big or a bigger recruit than the 3 that Jeff listed.

I should have listed him, but the point was that if anyone should be complaining about getting "the best" in-state guys, it's OSU fans.

Pretty much every single "elite" in-state recruit over the past 25 years has either gone out-of-state or to OU... just off the top of my head:

Xavier Henry - out of state
Blake Griffin - OU
J.R. Giddens - out of state
Ryan Humpheries - OU
Sheldon Williams - out of state
Eton Thomas - out of state
Jeff Webster - OU
Lee Mayberry - out of state
Waymon Tisdale - OU

Just by pure ranking on Rivals, Obi was a higher rated recruit than Blake.

Terrence Crawford, Joe Adkins, and Estell Laster were all big time guys.

Jeff....no doubt OSU has missed on almost all the big time recruits from Okie.

How do you figure that, when they came out in different years?

Terrence Crawford, Joe Adkins, and Estell Laster were all big time guys.

They were big recruits, no dobut. Chiati Roberts was also a pretty big-time recruit.

But I'm talking "elite"... I'm pretty sure all of those guys I listed above were McDonald's AAs... except for maybe Eton Thomas...

OSU has never signed a McDonald's AA from Oklahoma.

Not what one would expect out of the biggest basketball power in the state.

The guys from the 80s are no big surprise. OU was obviously the better program then.

But it is a little bit surprising that at least one of those guys from the 1990s or 2000s didn't pick OSU.

That's not to say OSU was a better overall program, but OSU did go to the Final Four twice in the span of a decade... so you know... we had that going for us and everything.

Obi #19 vs Blake #23. Both 5 stars. I understand the years were different. If you simply look at where they were ranked, Obi was higher.

I dont even care if guys like Xavier Henry and Daniel Orton go to KU and Kentucky. I would just like to clean up on all the Cade Davis, Nick Sidorkis, Keaton Page, Rotnei Clarke, Caleb Patterson, Kyle Hardrick, and James Watson's that are out there.

I dont care if half of those guys could never start at OU. I still want them on the roster. You need guys from Oklahoma that care about that state school (I know not all of those kids did) but most of them would have laid it on the line like Cade does if they had been given the chance. Instead, we just flat out passed on some of them and now they are wasting away or playing elsewhere, when they could be getting their shot at their home state school.

JMO. I wish these kids wouldn't leave state. It's annoying. If we had 12 great players, it wouldn't bug me. But we are short-handed nearly every year and guys like this could playing. People thought Caleb Patterson was a project and not worth a scholarship, but I'd love to have him right now.

Two more examples are Matt Gipson and Matt Gibson. Both played at Hawaii for 3-4 years and had good careers. If they had spent their careers at OU they might have been solid contributors like Tyrel Reed and Brady Morningstar are at KU. Instead we just didn't recruit Gibson and Gipson left OU...for whatever reason.

Kevin Bookout is an in-state guy that would definitely help this years team.

Exactly, if you are recruiting 3 star players to fill out your roster with role type guys why wouldn't you get kids who are in state and will be loyal to the program. They are much more likely to work hard and stick around through the first couple of rough years of non playing time. Reed and Morningstar are great examples at KU.

David Godbold is a great example for OU. A few others would be kids like Adam Liberty (WSU/ORU), Caleb Green (ORU), Jonathan Bluitt (ORU), Tony Heard (TU), etc.

I know you are at a disadvantage when a school like ORU or TU is recruiting them as their top priority so they may choose to be "the man" at one of those schools but it seems as those sometimes OU has pursued guys who are similar talent levels out of state (Neysmith, Early, Leary).
